Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Hj. Kasihani K. E. S. M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Roembilin Soepadi M.A. Key words English Phonology Course (EPC) development research University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. The existence of an instructional material as one of the component of the curriculum before conducting the teaching learning process becomes the main point for the researcher in leading the development research. The unavailability of the instructional English Phonology Course material is the essential problem in this research. That is why the researcher is going to develop the EPC material based on the existed syllabus that has been also developed by him before. In conducting the development research the researcher modified by himself the Kevin Kruse s ADDIE model. ADDIE stands for Analysis Design Development Implementation and Evaluation. It meant that the researcher adapted and adopted the ADDIE model from the original one. The researcher conducted his development research based on the existed syllabus. So he started from the second stage of the ADDIE modified model. In the design stage he made the revision of the existed syllabus. Then in the development stage the researcher made a preliminary product. Then he consulted the prototype product to the expert to get the validation. He asked two of his colleagues being the expert to get the validation. He got the suggestion in order to add the pictures related to the way of pronouncing English sounds from his first expert Dr. Amrin Batubara M.A. TEFL. While from the second expert Dr. Khairul Anwar S.Pd. M.Pd. the researcher got the suggestion to add the audio or video related to English pronunciation. Then he inserted some figures in his product as the first expert suggestion. He took the video of British English pronunciation tips from BBC and the Cambridge Pronouncing Dictionary in the form of computer programme as the supporting media as the second expert suggestion. In the next stage the implementation the researcher conducted the limited try out. The subjects of limited try out were his students who had taken EPC before. There were three classes but he did not take all of the students. He chose six students who represented the level of the students performance in terms of their score in EPC for each class. He chose two students for each levels high medium and low level. So the total participant was 18 students. It was held in four meetings. One meeting in a week so the researcher needed a month in conducting the limited try out. The first meeting he explained the purpose of the limited try out had class discussion to get the information related the students problems in EPC and distributed the questioner in order to know the students reasons in taking EPC. From the finding of the first meeting related to the students problem the researcher found and classified into two main problems. Those were related to the English vowel sounds and the English consonant sound. The second meeting of limited try out he conducted teaching learning of EPC by focusing on the English vowel sounds. In the third meeting he did the same thing as in the second meeting but the focus was different that was the English consonant sounds. In conducting those two meetings the second and the third meetings the researcher used his product as his reference in teaching EPC the video from BBC and the pronouncing dictionary in the form of computer programme as the teaching media. In the last meeting of limited try out he distributed the checklist to measure the qualification of his product. Then the result of the checklist showed that his product had met the qualification in terms of usefulness effectiveness and attractiveness. After getting the feedback from the students through the checklist he revised his product. Then he consulted to his advisor and got suggestion that the product should be completed by a series of exercises in the form of single English sound as well as the minimal pairs. The final product of this development research is an EPC book. It is recommended to use for the students of university level S1 degree. The strength of this instructional material are (1) the discussion in EPC book is presented in very clear explanation using a simple language without leaving out the essential so it will be easier to understand (2) the topics and subtopics related to EPC material are orderly arranged from the general into the specific one it makes the reader/the students easy to comprehend the content of the book (3) this EPC instructional material is not only provided by theoretical explanation but also the figures for each English sounds that will help the students in comprehending and practicing to produce English sounds with the correct pronunciation also use the right speech organs (4) this EPC book focuses on British English so the phonetics transcription used in this book relates to British accent and (5) this EPC book is completed a series of exercises in the form of single English sound as well as in the form of minimal pairs.
