Abstract

.Thesis English Language Teaching. Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. H. Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dipl. TESL M.Pd. Key words Reading Comprehension Think-Pair-Share The reading score in the first semester showed that fifteen students out of twenty-six students got below passing grade.It was because the activities in the reading lesson were monotonous and there were no cooperative activities. These conditions made the researcher conducted a classroom action research. This research is designed to improve the students reading comprehension ability through Think-Pair-Share strategy. The researcher worked collaboratively with her partner who taught in the same class. The study was conducted in two cycles of planning implementing observing and reflecting. In a cycle took four meetings. The first to the third meeting was for implementing the strategy while the fourth meeting was for reading test to check the students comprehension. Meanwhile the subjects of this study were 26 eleventh graders of MAN 2 Malang Batu in 2010/2011 academic year. The information of the data was gathered through Questionnaire 1 and 2 students achievement in the semester I 20 items of multiple choice questions in pre-and post- test observation sheets and field notes. The iteman software was used to score and to analyze the students answers. The strategy was considered success if 75% of the students passed the test and their gain was 10 point greater than previous score. Think-Pair-Share had helped the students to improve their achievement in reading. In the preliminary study the average score was 66.35 in the test 1 the average score was 75.96 and in the test 2 the average score was 79.23. The students gain was also improved. The gain the students got in the test 1 2 from the preliminary test was 13 points in average. It means that the strategy had reached the criteria of success. The appropriate procedures of Think-Pair-Share strategy to improve the reading comprehension ability of the eleventh graders were by modifying TPS strategy into watch-pair-share read-pair-share and summarize-pair-share. There are some suggestions that the researcher proposes in this study. The first is addressed to the teacher that this strategy is more efficient and effective if combined with other strategies and supported with good and interesting media and authentic reading material. The second is addressed to further researchers. Further researchers need to combine Think-Pair-Share strategy with other strategies develop other variations of Think-Pair-Share and implement this strategy to improve other genres and skills.
