Abstract

Thesis English Language Education Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd. (2) Prof. Utami Widiati. M.A. Ph.D. Key words genre-based approach writing skill recount Writing seems to be a difficult skill for the students of SMP 1 Batu Malang. It could be seen from the result of the preliminary study which showed that the ability of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Batu in writing paragraphs was still poor. The students were unable to express their ideas in a good paragraph. They made a number of mistakes in their writing in terms of organization language use and mechanics. To overcome the problems the researcher proposed one of the approaches in teaching recount paragraphs by implementing genre-based approach with its typical model as the preparation stages. The research aimed at improving the ability of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Batu in writing recount paragraphs using genre-based approach and its typical model. For this purpose it employed Collaborative Action Research in which both the researcher and her collaborator worked together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting on the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students writing products. The subjects of this research were 24 students of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Batu in the 2010/2011 academic year. The study was conducted in one cycle which was carried out in three meetings. The instruments used were the writing tasks observation checklist and field notes. The reflection was based on the findings of the observation of teaching learning processes and the students final products examined from the criteria of success including (1) students writing improvement ( at least 60% of the students achvieved the score of 70 ) and (2) students active participation obtained from observation checklist and field notes. The findings indicated that the Genre-based Approach could improve the students ability in writing recount paragraphs in the cycle. After the study the result showed that the students scores improved. There were 66.7% or 16 students who got the final writing score at least or greater than 70 or 16 students out of 24 students who achieved the target score (70). The steps include the stages (1) BKOF and MOT are to equip the students with vocabulary and language use by showing the example of the recount text which is combained with clustering form and followed by the exercises in terms of organization grammar and mechanics (2) JCOT is to invite the students in group work and group conference for feedback from the teacher by correcting and discussing organization grammar and mechanics (3) ICOT is the last stage where the researcher let the students work individually to compose the text independently. The researcher gave them the topics the students choose one. Then she asked them to write their ideas by themselves using clustering forms and to continue writing their ideas into recount text. Furthermore based on the positive findings some suggestions were offered. First the English teachers should implement genre-based approach in their teaching writing modified by clustering form. For future researchers it is suggested that they conduct research using genre-based approach to be especially cautious with the time management if they want to accomplish all the planned activities well.
