Thesis English Language Education Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Enny Irawati M.Pd. Key Words listening comprehension Pro-Active strategy English Study Program Jember State Polytechnics This study discusses the strategy to improve listening comprehension achievement of the fourth semester students of English Study Program Jember State Polytechnic. The preliminary study conducted showed that the ability of the students in listening comprehension was low and the students were not motivated to be active in the teaching learning process. Out of 20 students only 7 or 35% got scores equal or more than the passing grade score which is 70 and only 5 students or 25% were actively asking question on difficulties in doing exercises. To solve those problems the researcher used pro-active strategy which provides various activities of three stages procedure pre- whilst- and post listening. The activities integrate speaking reading and writing skills to support the students listening comprehension achievement. This study utilized a collaborative action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in conducting the research. The subjects of the study were 20 students of the fourth semester of English Study Program Jember State Polytechnic in the academic year 2010/2011. This study was conducted in one cycle by following the procedure of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. There were two criteria of success (1) every student should gain 10 points to their preliminary score and (2) they have to be actively involved in the teaching learning process at least in good level. The instruments for collecting the data consist of a test field notes observation sheets and questionnaire. The findings of the study revealed that the use of Pro-Active strategy improved the students listening comprehension achievement. It comprises the following steps (1) discussing related picture (2) discussing related reading text (3) finding the definition of the crucial vocabularies (4) predicting the topic (5) taking notes while listening (6) finding the main ideas (7) finding details information (8) listening between the lines (9) linking between 2 listening aural text with the same topic (10) delivering critical thinking and making inference related to the topic (11) discussing grammar used in the aural text (12) summarizing (13) learning more vocabularies pronunciation and mastering the content of the aural text through reading aural text script while listening at the same time. The improvement can be seen in the increased score of the students listening comprehension after the implementation of the teaching of listening using pro-active strategy. All students gained at least 10 points to their preliminary study score. 16 out of 20 or (80%) students got more than or equal to 70. The range score became 65-95. despite the score of the students improvement in listening comprehension the finding also indicated that the students were actively involved in the teaching of listening using Pro-Active strategy. At meeting three there were 87.5% of students involved in pre-listening activity 92.5% for whilst-listening activity and 95% in post-listening activity. From the questionnaire it was found that the students gave very good responses to the strategy applied with the score of 80.6. It means that they took more benefit from during the strategy applied. Then based on the findings it is suggested that the English teacher should apply this strategy in the listening class. further researchers can conduct more intense research study by implementing pro-active strategy to the different level of students.
