Key words board games speaking ability. Speaking English is one skill that most students of MTS NU Kraksaan would like to master to guarantee that they have learned the language. This is still a difficult task for most students especially in the seventh graders. Some problems faced by the teacher and the students are that most English teachers are hard to set the strategy and the media to stimulate the students to express their ideas fluently. Domination of drilling and memorization of dialogues are also the other factors of the students less motivation. Besides most classrooms activities are dominated by teacher talk. In addition to these points students also face problems that they are reluctant and afraid of speaking. Therefore the use of board games intentionally will make them learn the language easily. Basically board game is an interesting media since it covers the power of play games and the language learning. This game can be obtained from many sources like the Internet or the teachers can make it themselves with the idea from the Internet. Dealing with the idea in using board games the study was focused on examining how using board games as instructional media can improve the students participation during the class activities and their speaking ability. The board games were chosen as they are appropriate for the seventh graders who were familiar with the games play in their childhood. In terms of context language and expressions found in the board games are appropriate for their level. Besides board games use the power of interaction. The two players take turns to roll a dice and each player must say something or respond the classmate related to which place they land on the board. Board games are very invaluable for the students as a break and at the same time allow students to practice language skills. As a result the students practice the drill of using English with their classmate. In this study the researcher applied collaborative classroom action research (CCAR). The research was carried out in two cycles the first cycle consisted of three meetings while the second cycle two meetings. The data were collected through some instruments namely speaking performance test observation checklists field notes and questionnaire. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the research show that board games improved the students speaking ability in asking for and giving opinion and increased their participation and involvement during the class activities. Their speaking performance developed in terms of communication fluency and accuracy. This can be seen from the students score that improved from 67 as the average score in Cycle 1 to 79 in Cycle 2. In Cycle 1 there were 9 students (39.13%) who met the criteria of success. In cycle 2 21 students met the criteria of success or 91% of the students succeeded. Their participation in the classroom reflected in questionnaire also increased. They showed their positive responses toward the use of board games with the average quantification 77 or 20 students (86.9%) in Cycle 1. It increased 100% in Cycle 2. Based on the findings it can be concluded that using board games to teach speaking in the classroom could improve the students skill and ability in asking for and giving opinion and their involvement. The success in using board games is based on the following procedures brainstorming the students background knowledge of the topic providing pictures and stimulating questions in the context and their responses enriching vocabulary and drilling the pronunciation providing models of dialogue inviting the students to identify the structure of spoken expressions modeling the procedure by demonstrating the use of board game grouping the students asking the students to play board game assigning the students to make role play performance monitoring the students activity and giving feedback on the students performances. For the teachers who use such kind of these board games are advised to make them more contextual and challenging and for those who have great willingness to have independent study are greatly advised to explore more on the use of board games for speaking and enriching the students vocabulary.
