Abstract

Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. H. Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D (II) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd Keywords reading comprehension English texts GRP strategy This study was designed to improve the students reading comprehension ability through GRP strategy. It was conducted to solve the students problems in the teaching and learning process especially in the teaching of reading. The strategy was selected because it was believed to be able to overcome the students problems in comprehending the English texts especially expository texts. Thus this study was directed to solve practical problems in the teaching and learning process especially in the teaching of reading. The research problem was formulated as follows How can GRP strategy improve the reading comprehension achievement of non-English department students of STAI Bahrul Ulum . The study employed a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborator as a research team worked together designing the lesson plan implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. The subjects of this research were the second semester students of STAI Bahrul Ulum Jombang in academic year 2010/2011 which consisted of 37 students. This research study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle of the research study encompassed three meetings of the strategy implementation and one meeting for the reading comprehension test. The data of this research study were obtained through reading tests observation checklist and field notes at the end of the cycle. The findings of this research study indicated that the GRP strategy was successful in improving the students in comprehending expository texts. The improvement can be seen from the increase of students mean scores and the students individual score percentage from preliminary study to Cycle 2. The students mean score had improved greatly from 65.56 to 75.31 in cycle 2 and the students individual score percentage had achieved to a great extent from 35% to 78% students who got score equal or greater than 70. The mean score and the students individual score indicated higher than predetermined criteria of success that was 70% of 37 students who got score of 70. The appropriate procedure of GRP strategy in teaching reading comprehension encompassed the following stages (1) teacher prepares students for reading the assignment by assessing and developing requisite background knowledge (2) after understanding their purposes for reading students read silently in order that they can more concentrate in reading. When most students have finished reading then teacher asks students to share details that they remember by asking some of the students. As students recall information the teacher records the information on the board (3) after recording all the information the students can remember students return to the reading materials to make corrections and adds information (4) teacher next assists the students in organizing the information e.g.how to find the main idea and supporting details of the text finding literal and implied meaning in the text and finding detail information of the text and (5) the final step is to test students on their short-term memory of the information. Based on the students achievement using GRP strategy in comprehending expository texts it was suggested for the English teachers to apply GRP strategy as one of many alternatives that can be used in the teaching of reading. Second for students the result of this study can give contribution to the improvement of learning to comprehend the texts for the second semester students of STAI Bahrul Ulum. Finally for further researchers it is expected that the research result can be significant evidence to provide details about the implementation of a particular strategy in reading classes by using GRP strategy in classroom action research (CAR) design. Thus it can be their reference in conducting the same strategy.
