Abstract

Key words Mind mapping Reading Comprehension This study is to investigate whether Mind Mapping Strategy can improve the students ability in comprehending reading passages. In other words the main objective of this study is to find out whether the students who have been taught using Mind Mapping Strategy achieve better reading comprehension than those who have been taught using non Mind Mapping Strategy. To be more specific this study is conducted to find out (1) whether the low achieving students in the experimental group who have been taught using Mind Mapping Strategy significantly achieve higher score than the low achieving students in the control group (2) whether the high achieving students in the experimental group who have been taught using Mind Mapping Strategy significantly achieve higher score than the low achieving students in the control group. The design of this study is a Quasi-experimental or Nonrandomized Control Group Pretest-Postest Design. The subjects of this study were students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Malang which is located on Jalan Arjuno. They were the second semester students. The choice of the second semester was made because of the following reasons (1) students never utilize the Mind Mapping Strategy (2) they have the same background meaning that they have accepted English subject so their competence in English is relatively the same (3) their age is relatively the same. Furthermore they were given a task of five texts of English after they accepted treatment to investigate the students ability in understanding the reading passages. In order to get the result of the mean difference between the control and the experimental group t-test for independent samples was applied. The result of the test showed that the mean score of the experimental group was 54.91 whereas the mean score for the control group was 54.73. After applying t-test formula for independent sample for 44 it indicates that the t value was 0.057. Since the t-value indicates 1.684 at .05 % level of significance it can be concluded that there was not enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that the means of the two groups are not significantly different. In other words it can be inferred temporarily that the Mind Mapping Strategy could not help the students to gain a better achievement in reading comprehension of English texts. Furthermore the end result of t-test showed that the mean score of high achieving students of experimental group was 66.00 and the mean score of the high achieving students of control group was also 67.56. In as much as the mean score of the two groups were not significantly different it can be inferred that there was no significant distinguishing achievement between the high achieving students in the experimental group and the high achieving students in the experimental group who got the Mind Mapping Strategy and non Mind Mapping Strategy. Different from the high achieving students it was found that the mean score of the low achieving students in the experimental group was 58.40 whereas the mean score in the control one was 49.23. Having consulted to the t-test formula it turned out that the t value was 9.05 which indicated it was higher than t- table at 5 % level of significance. So it can be inferred that the Mind Mapping Strategy is effective to be used in teaching reading for the low achieving students at MTs in comprehending reading passages. In other words this study indicates that Mind Mapping Strategy can be applied to help or to improve students comprehension ability for low achieving students.
