Nur Mukminatien M.Pd Key words DRTA strategy reading comprehension narrative text. This study is designed to improve the students reading skill by using DR-TA strategy. The objective of the study is to improve the students reading ability through Directed Reading-Thinking Activity strategy at MTs Negeri Mojoroto Kediri. This strategy is nominated since it has been proven an effective strategy to help the students develop critical reading skill and encourage them to be active readers. The study is a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher work together in conducting this study. The subjects of this study are 43 second year students of MTs Negeri Mojoroto of the 2010/2011 academic year. All students are taken as the subjects of the research. The researcher acts as the teacher while the English teacher becomes the researcher s collaborator to observe the implementation of DR-TA strategy. This study was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings following the procedures of an action research namely planning of the action implementation of the action observation and analysis and reflection. To collect the data the researcher uses some instruments such as observation form field notes and students reading score. The finding shows that the appropriate procedures of implementing the DR-TA strategy in the teaching learning of reading skill of this study consists of the following procedures in pre-reading step (1) grouping the students (2) explaining the objective of the lesson (3) leading the students to the topic by delivering some questions and showing a picture (4) asking the students to predict the topic of the text from the picture and the title given (5) intoducing new vocabulary items in the guided silent reading (1) delivering open ended questions (2) asking the students to make the predictiont of the topic of the text and write the prediction in the worksheet (3) instructing the students to share with their pairs (4) asking the students to read the text silently by answering the questions (5) asking the students to confirm whether their prediction need to be revised or not in post reading step (1) checking and Discussing their prediction to prove whether their predictions need to be revised or not. (2) asking to evaluate their predictions using information from the text to support their opinions (3) asking the students to do the task individually and discuss their answers (4) guiding the students to find out the answers of the literal and inferential questions (5) asking the students to find evidence to support their prediction. The finding of the research also shows that the implementation of DR-TA strategy in the teaching and learning reading skill is effective in improving the students reading skill. The improvement is indicated by the increase of the students score. In preliminary study there were 11 students ( 25%) whose score reached the minimum score (KKM 60 ) it could encrease to 27 students (62%) in cycle one and improved to 38 students (88%) in cycle two. The findings of the study also described that this strategy improved the students involvement and participation from 57.03% in Cycle 1 to 85.% in Cycle 2.
