Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. M. Soenardi Djiwandono (2) Dr. Enny Irawati M.Pd. Key words reading comprehension questions-answer relationship strategy. From the result of preliminary study at MA Nadhlathul Athfal Sampang it was found that students were confused to answer the questions based on the text given they could not answer the questions because they did not know how to answer them they spent too much time only to find the answers. They were passive in reading activity process and they were not motivated in reading materials. This study was CAR in which the researcher as a teacher and a collaborator as an observer joined together in all stages. The instruments used to collect the data were observation checklist field note and reading comprehension test. The subjects were eleventh grade students of MA Nahdlathul Athfal Sampang. The result of the study indicates that the implementation of QAR strategy was successful in improving the students reading comprehension. First the students active participation achieved from the observation sheet is above 60%. Second 60% of students could get the score of minimum acceptable. The finding shows that In reading comprehension test students average score was 30.08 before the action 40.16 in the Cycle 1 and 44.20 in the Cycle 2. The student active participation in Cycle 1 was 57% and 75% in Cycle 2. QARs strategy can be effective strategy for teaching reading comprehension by implementing the following activities (1) dividing the class in groups of three (2) introducing the concept of QAR strategy using a short paragraph (3) modeling and explaining each type of questions using a visual aid (4) activating the students schemata related to the text (5) asking the students to read the text silently (6) asking each group to answer the questions based on the levels of questions (7) asking the groups to show the answers (8) determining the correct answers with the whole class (9) Giving feedback (10) giving conclusion of the benefits of QAR strategy. Furthermore taking into account the positive findings of the implementation of QAR strategy to teaching of reading it is suggested that English teachers utilize QAR strategy as one alternative solution in improving students reading comprehension skill. For future researchers the result of this study can be use as a reference in conducting similar studies in using different background such as general English for specific purpose and in other subject like writing ability listening ability or speaking ability.
