Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching of Post-graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Monica D. D. Oka M.A. (2) Prof. Hj. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Key words pre-translation text analysis informative text operative text translation quality Translation teaching approach can be broadly classified into performance magistrale process-oriented skill-oriented and function-oriented (or also called translation-oriented text analysis) approaches. The reported experiment here is related to the last approach. This topic was selected because generally in Indonesia the approach used is the first approach. One of the important features of the last approach is pre-translation text analysis. This current research was conducted to see whether students pre-translation text analysis affect their translation quality. The translation quality could be further identified as informative text and operative text translation quality. The study employed quasi-experimental design with 48 sample size 24 of whom were included in the experimental group and the other 24 in the control group. The experimental group did pre-translation text analysis before doing the post test but the control group did not do pre-translation text analysis before doing the test. For four weeks before the post test the experimental group was trained to do pre-translation text analysis before doing the translation assignment. In contrast the control group was not trained to do pre-translation text-analysis they were taught using the conventional read-and-translate technique. The result of the pre-test showed that the mean score of the translation quality for the control group was 48.0833 and that for the experimental group was 45.7500. Analyzed using t-test the t-value was 1.245 which was significant at the level of .220. Thus it showed no significant difference. Therefore the translation quality of the control group and the experimental group were equal prior to the study. The result of the post-test showed that the mean score of the control group (50.6250) was lower than that of the experimental group (54.4583). However after the t-value calculation it was found that they were not significantly different. The t-value was -1.768 which was only significant at the level of 0.84. It can be stated that pre-translation text analysis does not have significant effect on the translation quality. The reasonable interpretation of the finding were (a) the pre-translation text analysis and non-pre-translation analysis techniques both do not influence the students translation quality because another variable is much more influential and (b) pre-translation text analysis actually influences the students translation quality but the study limitation has made the study unable to show the relation. The study limitations attributable to the finding were not-random sampling is used limited number of subjects and non-ideal test construction due to non-standard readability level. Based on the finding it is suggested that the teaching of Translation be given in the late semesters (sixth seventh and/or eight semesters) because whatever the method of teaching it probably would not improve the students translation skills if the English skills is not high. The result of this current research was not very convincing for several weaknesses in the research methodological aspects e.g. sampling procedure number of subjects and test difficulty level. Therefore it is recommended other research is done with bigger number of subjects and random sampling procedure and texts with more appropriate level of difficulty be used in the test construction. Finally it is also recommended that English skills be included in the future research design so that the interpretation on the superiority of this variable over other related independent variable can be studied.
