Abstract

Thesis. Graduate program in English Language Teaching. University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A Ph. D. (II) Dr. Arwijati Wahjudi M. Pd Dip. TESL. Key words Pod English movie speaking ability According to the preliminary study which was conducted in three ways (interview observation and test) it was found out that class H of Basic Oral and Auditory Course of English Department Brawijaya University performed the lowest in speaking skill. The teacher mentioned that students speaking performance in her class is not satisfactory. Most of the students delivered speeches with a lot of errors and made a lot of pauses in delivering their speech. To cope with the problem the researcher employed Pod English movie. This study was designed to improve the students speaking skill of the first semester students of English Department Brawijaya University. The study was collaborative action research classroom based in which the researcher and the collaborator worked together the researcher observed the students during the implementation of the strategy while the collaborator acted as the teacher. This study was conducted in one cycle consisting of three meetings using the following procedures planning implementing observing and reflecting. The data of the study were collected through the observation checklist observation sheets field notes pictures and questionnaire. The subjects were 24 students of the first semester of class H of Basic Oral and Auditory Course of English Department Brawijaya University. The findings of the study showed that Pod English movie can help the students to improve their speaking skill if it follows several procedures (1) the students brainstorm about the topic at the beginning of the lesson led by the teacher (2) the students watch the Pod English movie once and discuss what they have learnt from the movie (3) the students watch the movie once more the teacher pauses the movie in learn part then the teacher asks the students about what they have learnt from the movie (4) the teacher shows the students watch part of the movie (5) the teacher shows the part try and stops in each part of the drilling by native speaker in the movie then the students repeat what the native speaker says (6) the students work in group and prepare a dialog they want to perform in front of the class (7) the students carry out role play they have prepared in front of the class (8) the teacher gives feedback toward students role play after each performance (9) the teacher gives reinforcement toward the lesson that students have learnt. In addition the findings of the study indicated that Pod English movie was successful in improving students speaking skill. Based on the analytic scoring rubric to assess speaking assessment held in three meetings it is figured out that students speaking performance had improved from the previous data taken in the preliminary data which only reached 2.26. From the analytic scoring rubric in three meetings it was found out that the students speaking performance achieved 3.43. It is suggested that the English teacher who teach speaking of first semester of college students need to improve speaking skill of English learners by using Pod English movie. It is also suggested to the Head of English Department of Culture Studies Faculty Brawijaya University to provide facility to develop Pod English movie for aiding the first semester students who take Basic Oral and Auditory course.
