Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D. Key words storytelling technique improve listening skill On the basis of the result of preliminary study it was figured out that the listening achievement of the first-year students at MAPN Batu was still unsatisfactory. Students had difficulty in terms of comprehending and finding detailed information from the text they listened. Those problems are caused by at least two factors. First the teachers lack creativity to use available listening material. Second the teachers lack varieties in teaching listening. The study is designed to improve the students listening skill through the use of the storytelling technique. The objective of the study is to find out how the storytelling technique can be used to improve the students listening skill in terms of comprehending the story and finding explicit information in the story. Conducting an action research design which is based on the classroom the researcher as well as the English teacher individually observed the teaching and learning process. This study was carried out in two cycles. The subjects of this study were the students of grade XA of MAPN Batu. The instruments were the observation sheets field notes and listening tests. The criteria of success were determined on the basis of students improvement on the listening test and their response and engagement in the activities during the implementation of the storytelling technique. The criteria of success were achieved when the average of the students listening test could achieve the score greater than or equal to 65 the Minimum Mastery Criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum/ KKM) which is employed at the school. In addition each student could achieve at least 61. Besides the success was also determined on the basis of students interest and engagement in the activity. The technique is considered successful when all of the students have a positive response in variety of positive body language consistent focus verbal participation student confidence and fun and excitement towards the implementation of storytelling technique. With the implementation of the technique using picture and puppet the criteria of success were unsatisfactorily achieved in Cycle 1. Of the students listening test it was found that the mean score was 62. And the poorest score was 60. In addition as gained from the observation sheets and field notes it was found that the majority of all students exhibited negative responses on the implementation of storytelling. In contrast to Cycle 1 with the use of computer multimedia implemented in the storytelling activity the criteria of success achieved in Cycle 2 was successful. From the result of listening test it was discovered that the mean score of the students listening test was 76. And the poorest score was 67. Meanwhile as gained from the observation sheets and filed notes it was found that all students exhibited positive responses on the implementation of storytelling. The findings showed that the effective procedure of the storytelling technique was (1) showing animated picture to the students (2) asking about the picture (3) giving the students guided vocabulary related to the story (4) practicing the pronunciation of the vocabulary (5) asking the students to give opinion about their previous understanding about the story (6) telling the story using computer multimedia to make it truly comprehensible to the students and (7) asking the students to answer orally about characters specific or detailed information and moral values of the story. It can be concluded that the storytelling technique has been proven to be able to improve the students listening ability in the terms of comprehending the story and finding detailed information in the story. English teachers are recommended to make use of the storytelling technique in their teaching to improve students listening ability. Other researchers are suggested to conduct research by implementing the storytelling technique in other language skills. Material developers are recommended to develop materials by using stories for MA students by considering the students specific characteristics. Finally the school principal is suggested to provide facilities in this case various kinds of English stories especially religious story books in the library to improve the students interest in stories which are written in English and English it self.
