Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Mohammad Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D. (II) Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key Words QAR Strategy improvement reading ability The result of the preliminary study conducted in MAN Pelabuhanratu Sukabumi showed that students reading comprehension ability was not satisfactory yet. It was seen from the average scores achieved in summative test which mostly involved reading activity and was still under the minimum passing grade (KKM). Regarding this classroom action research implementing QAR strategy was conducted to overcome the students problem in reading comprehension. This research is designed to improve the students reading comprehension using QAR strategy which involves students to participate actively and gives them guidance to deal with reading comprehension. The research problem of this study is How can QAR strategy improve the reading comprehension of the eleventh graders of MAN Pelabuhanratu This study was conducted in two cycles following the procedures planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle in this study employed four meetings which consisted of three stages namely Modelling Guiding dan Practicing stages. The data were gathered through reading comprehension tests done in the practicing stages in every meeting observation checklist and field notes. It was found that the appropriate model of QAR strategy in teaching reading Modelling stage activities are (1) delivering the learning objectives (2) delivering the topic (3) dividing students into groups of four (4) explaining the four types of questions in the QAR strategy (5) distributing text 1 (6) asking students to read fast (skimming) and analyze the questions in the text and (7) together with the students discuss the questions categorized to each type of the four types of questions and answers them. Guiding stage (1) distributing text (2) asking students to read silently and analyze type of questions in text (3) asking every group to answer the questions categorized to each type of the four types of questions by discussing in their own groups (4) each group explains to the class the questions types and the answers discussed in its group (5) giving feedback to the students answers. Practicing stage (1) distributing text 3 (2) assigning students to answer the questions individually (3) asking students to accumulate their works (4) explaining the use of tense mostly applied in the text by giving some examples and (5) discussing students answers. Finally English teachers facing similar problem are suggested to apply QAR strategy for it is beneficial to improve the reading comprehension and to motivate students to participate actively in teaching and learning process. For other future researchers it is suggested for who are interested in conducting a research dealing with reading comprehension for SMA/MA level to conduct a classroom action research using other applicable and effective teaching reading strategies so that the result of their findings can be used by other teachers as other alternative teaching strategy for reading comprehension.
