Abstract

Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd. (II) Drs. Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key words Reading comprehension SQ3R This study is aimed at improving the ability of the eighth graders of MTs Negeri Jambewangi Selopuro Blitar in reading comprehension by implementing SQ3R strategy. This strategy is chosen based on its effective stages in encouraging and having the students involved in teaching learning process of reading comprehension. Consequently the objective of the research is to implement SQ3R in improving the students achievement reading comprehension of descriptive texts in general. To achieve the purpose collaborative classroom action research was employed by following four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. This study was implemented in two cycles in which the first cycle was carried out in four meetings. The second cycle consisted of three meetings. This strategy consisted of five stages survey question read recite and review. In the pre-reading phase the teacher encouraged the students activate their schemata by showing pictures. In whilst reading phase survey question read and recite were implemented. While in the post reading phase review was carried out. The subjects of the research were 40 students of grade VIII C of MTs Negeri Jambewangi Selopuro Blitar in the 2010/2011 academic year. The instruments employed for gathering the data were observation checklist quiz and questionnaire for the students. The results of the research revealed that SQ3R strategy improved the students reading comprehension ability of MTs N Jambewangi Selopuro Blitar. The improvement was indicated by the students mean score which increased from 39.5 in preliminary study 70.625 in the first cycle and 77.75 in the second cycle. Besides the results of the study showed that the students were enthusiastic motivated and actively involved in teaching learning process. Based on the result of the study the researcher suggests English teachers implementing SQ3R strategy in teaching reading as an alternative solution for English teachers who have similar problems in teaching reading. Meanwhile future researchers are recommended to conduct a study of SQ3R strategy at the same level or higher level to verify the advantages of this strategy in teaching reading with other text types.
