Abstract

Key Words Reading Materials textbook content language technicality suitability The goal of the study is to investigate how the reading texts in the Interlanguage English for Senior High School Students XI textbook meet the requirements of good reading materials. This goal is translated into four main aspects content language technicality and suitability of reading materials to students perception. For the design of this study the researcher utilized descriptive-evaluative or content/document analysis. Analysis sheet and questionnaire were two instruments used to obtain the data. The analysis sheet was developed from criteria decided by the Board of National Standard of Education (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan/BSNP) and equipped with some criteria suggested by Nuttal (1989) Cunningsworth (1995) Sheldon (1987) and Miekley (2005). The questionnaire was extracted from the decided criteria to see the students attitude toward the reading materials in that textbook. The fulfillment of the criteria was taken from Nugraha (2010) which was qualified with very good (85%-100%) good (65%-84%) fair (55%-64%) poor (40%-54%) and very poor (0%-39%). The evaluation was carried out by 5 evaluators consisted the researcher as main evaluator and four peer evaluators from teachers and graduate students in English Language Teaching program State University of Malang. The results of evaluation show that the content of the reading materials is classified as good the language of the reading materials is categorized as very good technicality of the reading materials is considered as fair and suitability of the reading materials is categorized as good. Besides there are some mistakes regarding activities and exercise grammar and language mechanism found in the materials. Dealing with the findings some suggestions are proposed. First is to the teachers. Dealing with the technicality of reading materials in this textbook which are not all of them provided with illustrations/images they are suggested to use other media such as pictures or slides in powerpoint program to stimulate students schemata. The second goes to the authors it is suggested they provide an interesting material both in terms of the content and the technicality. Last to future researchers it is suggested that they use the result of this present research as a reference. Besides since this study has analyzed only the second half of the textbook covered in the second semester hence it is recommended that the future researchers conduct a research on the first half of the textbook to gain more comprehensible results. In addition it is also recommended that they conduct an analysis of Interlanguage X and XII and use the result of this as a reference.
