Abstract

Thesis State University of Malang Graduate Program in English Language Teaching. Advisors (1) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip. TESL M.Pd. (II) Prof. Kasihani K.E.S M.A. Ph.D. Key words speaking materials speaking skill The unavailability of teaching materials for speaking skill that are suitable to the characteristics and the need of the students make the process and the result of English teaching especially for speaking skill in MAN Genukwatu Ngoro bad. The teaching of speaking was not focused on building students competence in using the language for communication. Based on the problems above this study aims at developing speaking materials for the tenth graders of MAN Genukwatu Ngoro. The result of the study is expected to give valuable significances for the English teachers the students and the future researchers in the effort of improving the quality of English language teaching. This study adapted the procedures of Research and Development by Borg and Gall (1983) with the following steps (1) need analysis (2) reference study (3) material development (4) expert validation and (5) try-out. Before becoming a final product the proto type of the product has passed twice revisions namely revisions based on the expert validation and revisions based on the finding in the try-out. After having done the procedures above the final product of speaking materials for the tenth graders was produced. It consists of two parts namely teacher s guide and students book. The teacher s guide contains suggested teaching procedures for each topic in the materials. Meanwhile the students book contains 10 topics namely (1) greeting and introducing (2) accepting and declining an invitation (3) accepting and canceling an appointment (4) expressing happiness (5) showing sympathy and attention (6) giving instructions (7) expressing gratitude (8) complimenting (9) congratulating and (10) expressing surprise and disbelief. Each topic has four kinds of exercises starting from warm-up as the pre-activity continued with modeling and practice as the whilst-activity and produce as the post-activity. The practice activities are graded from controlled guided and free. The product has met good qualification as teaching materials for speaking with the following criteria (1) the materials provide stimulus to learning (2) the materials help to organize teaching and learning process (3) the materials embody a view of the nature of language teaching and learning (4) the materials reflect the nature of learning tasks (5) the materials introduce the teachers to new techniques of teaching speaking and (6) the materials provide models of correct and appropriate language use. The weakness of the product is that not all units were tried out. Only three last chapters were tried out. Therefore the teachers who will implement the materials can make any changes of the materials to suit the need of the students.
