Abstract

Key words authentic text inauthentic text (artificial text) reading comprehension effectiveness This study was conducted to investigate whether the use of authentic texts in the teaching of reading comprehension is effective. The problem of the study is Are the reading comprehension scores of students who are taught using authentic text significantly higher than those who are taught using inauthentic text . As a tentative answer to the problem stated above the hypothesis for this study is stated as follows The reading comprehension score of students who are taught using authentic texts is significantly higher than those who are taught using inauthentic texts. The design of the study was quasi-experimental with non-randomized pretest-posttest control group. The samples of this study were taken from the population of the eight graders of SMP N 1 Playen Gunungkidul Yogyakarta in the 2010/2011 academic year. The populations were 190 students distributed in six classes class VIIIA - VIIIF. In the present study the sampling technique applied was simple random sampling which was taken by using lottery. The lottery was done toward the sixth groups of the populations. Hence each of the groups basically had the same possibility to be the sample of the research. The result of the lottery showed that class VIII D was chosen as the experimental group and class VIII F as the control group. In collecting data the instrument used was in the form of multiple choice test which covered the subject matter of reading comprehension. Pretest was administered to both groups at the same day before the treatment. The same test used in the pretest was also used as post test which was administered after the treatment to both groups at the same day. The experimental group was then taught reading comprehension by using authentic texts in the treatment. Meanwhile the control group was taught reading comprehension by using inauthentic texts in the treatment. The pretest means of both groups were analyzed statistically by using Lavene s. Lavene s Test revealed the significant value is .553 that is higher than .05. This result indicates that the difference between variances is not significant. This indicates that the subjects of experimental and control groups are not significantly different before the experiment in their pretest scores of reading comprehension test. Therefore an independent t-test was used to analyze the posttest means. On the statistical computation for posttest by using independent t-test revealed that t-value for df 62 is 4.17. It is bigger than t-critical value (1.671) at the level of significance of 0.05 for a one tailed test (t-value 4.17 t-critical value 1.671). This indicates that there is a significant difference of means scores between students who are taught using authentic texts and those who are taught using inauthentic texts in teaching reading comprehension. The gain of reading comprehension means scores of experimental group is significantly higher than the gain of reading comprehension means scores of control group. Therefore Ho was rejected and the hypothesis works. Based on the result of research findings it can be concluded that using authentic texts in teaching reading comprehension proved to be effective in increasing the students reading comprehension achievement. Thus it is suggested that English teachers/instructors to utilize authentic texts in teaching reading comprehension. Besides for future researchers it is suggested to conduct research on authentic texts in higher level. Since for those of higher level students are having much more linguistic knowledge and having much wider world knowledge than students of Junior High suitable and challenging authentic materials with miscellaneous topics is much easier to find. Moreover using authentic materials in authentic presentation becomes possible. Authentic presentation means we do not present the materials (articles/texts) in copies instead we present it as the way it is. For example when we are going to use articles from newspaper we should bring the newspaper consist of the articles in class not in copies. This enable for future researcher to give authentic materials taken from magazines or newspaper (printed/not on-line) to the students as the way they are. Using authentic presentation helps put the text into a context.
