The objective of this study is to find out how Story Mapping Strategy can improve the ability in writing narrative text of the eighth graders f MTs Bahrul Tajinan Malang. Generally the students got difficult in generating ideas and organized them into a good paragraph. Furthermore the teacher focused her teaching mostly in grammatical exercises and the product of writing. Therefore this strategy is considered appropriate to solve the students problems in writing particularly narrative text because story map can enhance students interpretative abilities by enabling them to visualize story characters events and settings. This study adopted action research design. The researcher and her collaborative teacher worked together in designing lesson plan setting the criteria of success implementing the action observing the action and making reflection. The subject of this study was the eighth graders of MTs. Bahrul Ulum Tajinan Malang of the 2010/2011 academic year. The study consisted of two cycles and used observation sheet field notes questionnaires and writing task for the instruments. The criteria of success were determined on the basis of students improvement on the writing achievement and their interest in the activities during the implementation of the strategy. The criteria of success were achieved when 65% of the students could get the score more than 60. Besides the success was also determined on the basis of students interest in the activity. The technique is considered successful when 75% of the students had positive perception on the implementation of strategy. With the implementation of the technique the criteria of success were successfully achieved in Cycle 2. There was 75% of the total number of the students who could get the scores more than 60 and 83% had positive perception on the implementation of story mapping strategy. The findings showed that the effective procedures of using Story Mapping in teaching narrative text was implemented in pre-writing whilst writing and post-writing stages. In pre-writing stages the teacher reconstructs the students prior knowledge about a narrative text by showing a famous story Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih and asked some questions about chronological order of the story. In the main activities the teacher gave the model of a narrative text entitled Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih and its story map and followed by explaining the procedure in writing narrative text using story map to the students. The teacher also discussed the generic structure and the usage of past tense in narrative texts. The students then were asked to create a story map and their draft individually. The teacher guided the students to revise and edit their draft and asked them to write a final composition. In the post activities students were asked to stick on their work on the wall and then collected in the form of portfolio. Then the result of students writing product were evaluated by using analytic scoring which described the students ability in mastering the five components of the writing namely content organization vocabulary grammar and mechanics. The findings of the research showed that the students gained good progress from the first to the second cycle. They could minimize the number of errors and mistakes in narrative texts they produce so that their writing could be understood easily. It is indicated by the increase of the percentages of the students who achieve the score of greater than or equal to 60 throughout the two cycles of the action that is 33% in the preliminary study 52% in cycle 1 and 75% in the second cycle. Besides the implementation of this strategy encouraged the students to be more active in the teaching and learning process. Based on the researcher findings it was concluded that the implementation of Story Mapping Strategy in teaching writing could improve the students writing ability. This improvement could be proved by the students writing achievement and the score obtained by the students. Some suggestions are proposed to the English teacher and future researcher. It is advisable for the teacher to use story mapping strategy in teaching writing particularly in narrative text because this strategy could help the students arranged a narrative text in a chronological order. In addition story map could increase students vocabulary. Second since the research findings showed positive results it is suggested to the future researcher especially those who are interested in applying Story Mapping Strategy. Here they are suggested to prepare a deliberate planning before conducting a similar study in order to make the implementation of Story Mapping Strategy runs well.
