Abstract

Unpublished thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang Advisors (i) Dr. Arwijati W. M DipTESL. M.Pd (ii) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti DipTESL. M.Pd Key words computer-based British Council s Short Stories reading comprehension. The objective of the study is to examine and describe how British Council s short stories can improve the reading comprehension ability of the eighth graders of MTs Hamid Rusydi Malang. Based on the preliminary study the students cannot find the topic of the paragraph or the text they need a long time to answer comprehension questions and the result of the reading test in preliminary study was still poor and low. The researcher wants to improve their achievement by using Computer Based British Council s short stories applying the story mapping. The problem in this research is How can the use of Computer Based British Council s short stories improve the reading comprehension of the eighth graders of MTs Hamid Rusydi Malang This study employed collaborative classroom action research in which the teacher and the collaborator worked together in planning implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. The subjects of this research were 25 students 2010/2011 academic year. This research was done in two cycles with some steps planning implementing observing the action and reflecting. Referring to the findings of the research the percentage of the improvement of the reading comprehension ability in cycle 1 is 60% and in cycle 2 is 88%. The activities in computer based British Council s short stories have improved the students achievement and based on the result of observation checklists make them more active. They enjoyed the teaching and learning activities through the implementation of Computer Based British Council s Short Stories. So it is suggested that the English teachers of other schools should implement the Computer-Based British Council s Short Stories in reading comprehension if their class has the same problem as the eighth graders of MTs Hamid Rusydi Malang. Future researchers can conduct the research about Computer-Based British Council s Short Stories in teaching language skills and language components with different text. Although most of the student s could finish it on time the future researchers should manage the time effectively use on line dictionary Encarta dictionary and use another story map to save the time.
