Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd Key words dialogue journal improve writing ability. This study is conducted in order to answer the research problem How can Dialogue Journal improve writing ability of the first year students of SMK Negeri 1 Singosari This strategy is chosen due to its strengths in encouraging students to be more actively involved in the teaching of writing and in helping students to reduce the worry to write in English so that students motivation and ability to write might improve. To answer the research problem Collaborative Action Research is conducted following the four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. This study was implemented in one cycle. The Cycle 1 consisted of nine sessions. The subjects of this study are the students of Ototronik Program 3 SMK Negeri 1 Singosari 2010 2011 which consists of 32 students. In this study the students were assigned to write two times in a week in their journal. Their journals were handed in on Monday and they were returned to the students on Wednesday after being responded and the students submitted the next entry on Saturday. The instruments used to collect data are observation sheet questionnaire field notes students journal entries and writing test. The results show that dialogue journals obviously can improve the students ability in writing sentences paragraphs. It has been observed that the improvements are caused by the regular writing practice done by the students and the teacher s response given to their writing. It becomes a sort of on going dialogue. It also develops a personal relationship between the teacher and each of his students. The improvements can be examined from two points of views process and product. In the form of process the students attitude improves from time to time as reflected from the results of observation and their answers in the questionnaire. First the students are actively involved during the writing activities. Second the students are highly enthusiastic in studying English especially in writing. Third the students can write journals freely. The last the improvements can be also examined from the number of topics and the average number of sentences and paragraphs. In the first entry they write in 11 topics while in the last three entries it improves to be 49 topics. In addition the amounts of the sentences improve in conjunction with the improvement of the average of paragraphs produced from the first entry to the next entry. In the first entry the average of sentences in one entry is 10.1 while in the sixth entry it improves to be 14.6. The average of the paragraphs that the students write in the first entry is 1.1 while in the sixth entry it improves to be 1.4. Meanwhile in the form of product it is found that there were only 5 students (17.8%) whose score is 75 but in the post test it became 75% (21 students) out of 30 subjects. The score has met the criteria of success of product of this study that is greater than or equal to 75. Finally on the basis of the findings some suggestions for the English teachers and the future researchers are made. First since the dialogue journal is a kind of informal writing we have to focus on the content of their writing rather than on the students mechanical errors. However if we want to develop the quality of their writing we may do a kind of non instructive correction without interrupting the communication or distracting from the meaning. In this case the teacher can serve as a model of correct English usage in the response given. To sum up the students journal entries can also be used by the teacher as a reflection to identify the students weaknesses in using the language so the teacher can plan the lesson and exercises focusing on the language use in the teaching and learning process.
