Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Key Words Pictures Writing skill Recount text Writing skill has important role in the English teaching program in Junior High School (SMP/MTs). It is one of the four language skills that must be learnt by students of SMP/MTs. However the ability of the eighth grade students of MTs. Assa adah II Bungah Gresik in writing is still dissatisfactory. The students feel still difficulties how to start writing and they don t have idea to write. This research is intended to improve the writing recount text of the eighth grade students of MTs Assa adah II Bungah Gresik by implementing writing process strategy with pictures. This strategy is chosen since it can lead the students to generate their ideas into a composition. Pictures usually take in the past events or last experiences and pictures certainly can assist the students to recall in details about events place time situation and people. A picture is source of thousands words because one picture can express the students something even has chronological events behind it. To achieve the purpose the researcher conducted the action research which was done in the classroom following four steps planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subject of the study were 31 students of the eighth grade of MTs. Assa adah II Bungah Gresik in 2010/2011 academic year. This research was conducted in two cycles. The first and second cycle included four meetings. The data of the research were taken from writing test rating scale field note and scoring rubric. The results of the research showed that the proper procedures taken in implementing writing process strategy with pictures included the following steps First displaying the students some pictures of the topic. Second grouping the students into small groups consisting of five or six students based on their friendship. Third distributing the worksheets with the pictures and the pictures must be in color and in different activities. Forth giving a model of how to generate their ideas by writing the keywords and the characteristics of recount text. Fifth encouraging the students ideas to write on the rough draft based on the ideas they gathered and they might open the dictionary. Sixth assigning the students to write the first paragraph based on the generic structure of recount text. Seventh assigning them to discuss their first paragraph with their friends and the teacher. Eighth asking them to exchange their draft to other groups do peer-editing and check the content organization language use vocabulary and mechanics. Ninth assigning the students to revise the draft based on their friends feedbacks and teacher. Tenth asking them to publish and stick on the whiteboard. Eleventh assigning them to submit their final draft. Furthermore the findings of the research showed that implementing writing process strategy with pictures has improved the writing skill of students of the eighth grade of MTs. Assa adah II Bungah Gresik in writing recount texts. In cycle one upper average score was 16 students and under average score was 15 students. In cycle two upper average score for final product was 25 students and under average score was 6 students. Also the findings of students revealed that the students participation were active and motivated by implementing writing process strategy with pictures in the teaching and learning activities. Based on the results above it can be summerized that implementing writing process strategy with pictures is very beneficial not only in improving the students writing skill but also in motivating the students in the learning activities. Therefore it is recommended that the English teachers implement writing process strategy with pictures in the teaching of writing skill especially in recount text since it is meaningful in the context of providing the students how to start their writing and have ideas to write. In the last for the next researchers particularly those who have the same problems and are interested in doing the research it is suggested that they implement this strategy in the teaching of recount text since recount text is one of the text types should be taught to the students of MTs. However in the carrying out the teacher should do in meeting more frequently and provide clear guidance so that the achievement of the students writing skill is further especially for the lower students.
