Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Soenardi Djiwandono (II) Dr. Gunadi H. Sulistyo M.A. Key Words reading comprehension reading improvement and reciprocal teaching technique Reading is the most important skill because it supports other English skills. Besides reading composes 35 of 50 items of UN 2007-2010. Therefore the students are expected to be able to comprehend the reading texts. However based on the preliminary study it was found that the students of MAN 8 Jombang still reached low achievement in reading test. They got some difficulties in identifying explicit and implicit information in the text identifying main and supporting ideas and making conclusions from information gotten from the text. This condition was related to some factors such as limited vocabulary low reading skill and low motivation. Furthermore three factors mentioned above may be caused by inappropriate teaching technique. Therefore for the improvement of the students reading comprehension ability the implementation of an appropriate teaching technique is really needed. Reciprocal Teaching Technique (RTT) consisting of four steps predicting clarifying questioning and summarizing was applied to solve those problems in reading comprehension. This research was aimed to improve the students reading comprehension ability in English through the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Technique (RTT). In RTT activities students were divided into groups consisting of four students. The students was encouraged to study how to predict the content of subsequent material based on stimulus such as pictures given by the teacher to clarify unfamiliar words phrases or sentences for others to generate questions and to summarize the text they had read. In this study a classroom action research design was implemented. The researcher planned the actions including preparing a suitable procedure of RTT designing the lesson plan and determining the criteria of success conducted the action observed the action and conducted reflections. The subjects of this research were 34 students of Grade XI IPS 2 at MAN 6 Jombang in the academic year 2010/2011. This research was conducted in 2 cycles which each of them consisted of four meetings. The data of this study was collected using three instruments (1) observation checklist to obtain information about teacher s and the students activities and performance during the implementation of RTT (2) field notes to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet and (3) reading comprehension test to know whether the students had made progress in reading comprehension. However in the study the main instrument was reading comprehension test. Consequently two other instruments were used to support data collected by reading comprehension test. The result of the research showed that the RTT was effective in improving the students reading comprehension. The improvement was indicated by the increase of the mean of total score throughout the cycles of action. In pretest the mean score was 33.33 while in reading test 1 the mean score was 37.4 and in the reading test 2 that was 40.35. Besides there was improvement of number of students getting 40 or above. In the pretest there was just 6 students in the reading test 1 there was 11 students and in the reading test 2 there was 18 students getting 40 or above. With the findings it is suggested that teachers use RTT as one alternative teaching technique in improving the students reading comprehension ability. Moreover future researchers are suggested that they conduct a similar study involving other graders as the subject of the following research. Besides future researchers are suggested to implement RTT using other kinds of texts.
