Key words YouTube Listening Skill The development of technology has influenced English teachers and students to improve their abilities in utilizing the technology in the teaching and learning process. Teachers have strong demand to utilize the information technology from the Internet as a medium in the application of classroom teaching process. Because the use of technology has an important role as a teaching and learning aid YouTube is proposed to solve some problems encountered in the teaching of listening skill. The preliminary study conducted at MTsN Jember II East Java showed that the students achievement in listening was under the minimum mastery criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal/KKM). To solve these problems the researcher used YouTube as an instructional medium by implementing three steps in the teaching of listening i.e. pre-listening (brainstorming) whilst-listening (viewing and discussing) and post-listening (reinforcing). The problem of this study was how can the use of YouTube Internet site improve the listening skill of the eighth graders of MTs Negeri Jember II. It is elaborated into two specific questions how can YouTube Internet site improve the literal listening comprehension of the eighth graders of MTs Negeri Jember II and how can YouTube Internet site improve the inferential listening comprehension of the eighth graders of MTs Negeri Jember II . This study utilized a collaborative action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan implementing the action observing the action and making reflection. The subjects of the study were the eighth graders of MTsN Jember II in the academic year 2010/2011. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. The instruments for collecting data consist of a test field notes observation sheets and questionnaire. The findings of the study show that the use of YouTube Internet site can improve the students listening skill. The improvement can be seen in the increased score of the students listening comprehension in Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. The average score in Cycle 1 was 69 4 while the average score in the end of implementation of this study was 78.1. More specifically there were 21 students (88%) who got higher than or equal to 70 in the end of the study while in the Cycle 1 there was 19 (79%) who got higher than or equal to 70.Beside the score of the students improvement in listening skill the findings also indicated that the students were actively involved and had high motivation in the teaching of listening using YouTube. The activities performed in the pre-listening step using YouTube were asking questions concerning with students condition giving explanation about the learning objective activating students prior knowledge by asking them to find the meaning of some difficult words or phrases related to the topic brainstorming and giving models of expression. In whilst-listening the activities were distributing the worksheet viewing an English video from YouTube doing the task and discussing the information in the video playing again the video from YouTube while continuing to do the task and then discussing for finding literal and inferential listening comprehension. Post-listening activities were conducted by reinforcement asking the students opinion and assign to browse the next material on YouTube Internet site. From the findings it is suggested that English teachers implement the teaching of listening using YouTube Internet site. The teachers should provide a variety of appropriate materials according to their level and provide various strategies in order to improve the learning process and results. In addition the duration of YouTube playing should be made appropriate with the students level. For the school principals they can use the findings of this study as a valuable input to make decision related to the teaching of English. It is also suggested that further researchers can utilize the findings of this research as reference and conduct more intense research study by developing YouTube materials for another skill such as speaking or writing.
