Abstract

Thesis English Language Education Graduate Program of State Unniversity of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A (II) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Key words improving reading comprehension SQ3R strstegy. This research is designed to improve the students reading comprehension to describe the implementation the SQ3R strategy. In a SQ3R activity students are assigned to comprehend a text with the procedure of survey question read recite and review. The research employs a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher work together in preparing a suitable procedure of the SQ3R strategy designing the lesson plan determining of the criteria of success implementing the action observing and doing reflections. The subjects of this research were 39 ninth year students of SMPN 1 Kalipuro Banyuwangi East java in the academic year 2010/2011. This research was conducted in 2 cycles each of which comprises two meetings. The data of this research were obtained through observation sheet to obtain information about the teacher s and students activities and performance during the implementation of the SQ3R strategy field notes to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet and a reading comprehension test to identify whether the students make a progress in reading comprehension. The research shows that the implementation of the SQ3R strategy in the teaching learning of reading comprehension can improve the students comprehension skill. It can be identified that after the implementation of the action there is an improvement in the number of students who got the score greater or equal to 70 in the first cycle was only 19 students out of 39 students or 48 72%. It had not fulfilled the criterion of success yet. In the cycle 2 the students who got the score greater or equal to 70 were 30 out of 39 students or 76 92%. It fulfilled the criterion of the success in terms of the score improvement. Moreover students were active in the class in terms of sharing ideas previewing answering the questions reading reflecting reciting and reviewing by using the SQ3R strategy. Based on the findings it is suggested that teachers use the SQ3R strategy as one alternative in the teaching of reading comprehension in the classroom. It is also recommended that the students employ the SQ3R strategy to practice their reading comprehension which can be done for other genres. For other researchers the finding can be used as valuable references for those whose interest is conducting research in the same field.
