Abstract

Unpublished Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr Johannes A. Prayogo M.Pd M.Ed. (2) Prof. Dr. Siusana Kweldju M.Pd. Key words DR-TA strategy reading ability narrative texts Reading is a difficult skill for the students of SMPN 2 Blang Bintang Aceh Besar. This could be seen from the result of the preliminary study which showed that the ability of the second year students of SMPN 2 Blang Bintang Aceh Besar in reading comprehension was still poor. The students had insufficient ability to comprehend texts. They did not know how to comprehend the texts appropriately. To overcome this problem the researcher proposed one of the strategies in teaching reading comprehension Directed Reading Thinking Activity or the DR-TA strategy. The DR-TA comprises three phases (Prediction Guided Silent Reading and Post Reading) which enable the students to set their purpose of reading monitor and evaluate their reading. The research aimed at investigating how DR-TA Strategy improves the reading comprehension ability of the second year students SMPN 2 Blang Bintang Aceh Besar. For this purpose it employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research in which both the researcher and her collaborator worked together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting on the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students reading achievement. The subjects of this research were 24 students of the second year students of SMPN 2 Blang Bintang Aceh Besar in the academic year of 2010/2011. The study was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used were a classroom observation sheet field notes and a reading comprehension test. The findings indicated that DR-TA strategy could improve the students ability in reading comprehension. The students average score increased from 57 in the preliminary study to 64 in Cycle 1 to 73.5 in Cycle 2. The findings of the study also described that this strategy improved the students involvement in the teaching and learning process. The students involvement was 95.2%. The improvement of the achievement tests and students involvement were came about through (1) activating the students prior knowledge before reading through showing pictures and posing questions related to the picture (2 ) introducing of new /contextual vocabulary (3) grouping the class (4) delivering DR-TA worksheet (5) giving modeling on how to state prediction (6) asking students to formulate predictions (7) asking students to discuss the prediction (8) delivering the text to read (9) asking students to read the text silently (10) asking students to underline/highlight sentence from the text that supports or rejects their prediction (11) asking students to verify their prediction whether it is confirmed or rejected by showing sentences or information provided in the text that support or reject their prediction (12) evaluating students comprehension toward the text through comprehension questions. Based on the research findings some suggestions are offered. First for English teachers they are suggested that they use DR-TA to teach reading. Second the students can utilize DR-TA strategy independently not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom. It is suggested that future researchers should conduct research using the DR-TA strategy not only to teach narrative text but also other types of text such as recount descriptive and so forth with different setting and subject and use the results of the present study as reference.
