Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd M.A Ph.D. (2) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti M.Pd. Dip. TESL. Key words Listening Achievement Extensive Listening Activity Podcast. The teaching of Interpretive Listening in the English Department of State University of Malang trains students to listen to audio taped listening materials answer optional comprehension questions on the Listening textbook and discuss the questions. The researcher finds out that the students find difficulties in understanding native speeches or utterances which cause the difficulty to answer and discuss the questions. Moreover the students stated that they need more time to improve their listening achievement and they find difficulties to facilitate themselves with appropriate and interesting listening materials. To overcome these problems the Extensive Listening Activity combined with podcast the Internet-based listening material was applied in collaborative action research. This research was intended to know how the Extensive Listening Activity using podcast can improve listening achievement of the students. The technique required the students to listen to chosen listening Podcast material to answer the extensive listening worksheets and to discuss the activities in Facebook note. The listening achievement that was specifically improved was the ability to understand native speeches and to comprehend main ideas and messages in a text and to improve students listening involvement. The research findings showed the positive improvement of both achievement and activity involvement in the majority of the students. The achievement gain of the students displayed positive results as indicated by the increase of mean score which was 62.5 in the preliminary study and steadily increased to 87.5 in Cycle 1 and 91.25 in Cycle 2 revealing that almost all the students scored above 75 out 100 points. It means that Cycle 2 had successfully verified the result and findings in Cycle 1. In regard with the students participation in the process of Extensive Listening Activity the analysis of students involvement observation students listening worksheets answer and questionnaire data demonstrated positive results in that the students participate actively during the Extensive Listening Activity process. The improvement of the listening achievement could be seen through the students participation in the Extensive listening activity process in two cycles the data obtained from students involvement observation and questionnaire showed positive results. The students involvement in the first and second cycles of Extensive listening activity gradually improved. It showed that the students were enthusiastic to improve their listening achievement through the Extensive listening activity using podcast moreover the discussion in Facebook notes made something different and they could share their comments ideas and opinions in virtual world. It is concluded that the students had successfully improved their achievement in terms of understanding native speeches and to comprehend main ideas and messages in a text and their learning participation in terms of active and positive engagement in learning process. By the end of Cycle one and Cycle two the students especially the weak-ability and less involved group gained significant improvement in the achievement reflecting that the process of learning had effectively touched the main causes of their listening difficulties. Since the extensive listening activity is packaged with podcast the Internet-based listening material EFL teachers/lecturers and the students are suggested to be familiar with the usage of Internet websites and other virtual world s multimedia such as Facebook and e-mail. Extensive listening activity with podcasts can be an independent learning strategy to improve students listening achievement. They can select any podcast materials from the podcast website addresses and share the podcast with their friends through Facebook Twitter or other social community websites.
