Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education. State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Hj. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd (II) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip.TESL. M.Pd Key Words communication strategy small group discussion acelerated class Senior High School students are required to be able to express meaning in transactional and interpersonal conversations in everyday life context. The need to communicate in a new language and culture causes some difficulties. As communication participants the learners employ certain strategies to get their meaning across. Hence authentic data on communication strategies employed by students in classroom context is needed in order to describe how learners negotiate the hindrance of their oral communication. The present study focuses on the types of and reasons for employing communication strategies of the accelerated class students at SMA Negeri 8 Malang in a small group discussion. The study employs qualitative design. The research instrument is mainly the researcher herself who works as the observer and interviewer. The researcher was equipped with other instruments i.e. observation form field notes video recording and interview guide and form. The English teacher also observed the discussion the result of which was used as the triagulation in data collection. Then the data gathered and then transcribed into the written form. After that interview was conducted to gain more information on the reasons for employing communication strategies during the discussion. The findings of the study show that the students employed ten out of twelve Dornyei s Classification of Communication Strategy (1995). The two strategies which are not employed by the students are Circumlocution and Word Coinage. However there are also other communication strategies employed by students which do not belong to Dornyei s Classification of Communication Strategy (1995) i.e Repetition Strategy Trial/Self-Correction Strategy and Combination of Some Strategies. The reasons for employing communication strategies employed are described as follows. (1) Topic Avoidance (3.42%) is used to avoid talking about topic the subjects are not familiar with. (2) Message Abandonment (15%) is used to avoid being trap in some linguistic difficulties because the subjects language mastery cannot cope with the message to communicate. (3) Approximation (6.16%) is used to express the idea quickly and more easily and which the subjects considered easily understood by their peers. (4) Code-Switching (7.53%) is used to spontaneously response to the flow of discussion. (5) The Use of Non-Linguistic Means (15%) is employed to emphasis what is expressed orally and to help others understand better the incomplete oral statement. (6) Appeal for Help (5.47%) is used to ask for incomprehensible vocabulary items and to confirm idea as well. (7) Literal Translation (1.02%) is used to express the intended meaning when the right terms are not known and they thought that those are the acceptable terms. (8) The Use of All Purpose Words (0.34%) is employed to fill in the gap while the speaker gains time thinking about what to say next. (9) The Use of Fillers/ Hesitation Device (23.97%) is used to give sign that the speakers still have the intention to continue the statement though they take some pauses. (10) Repetition (15.7%) is used as fillers while gaining the time for thinking and as a mean to make others understand the expression. (11) Trial/Self Correction (3.08) is used to make the utterance better for its diction and structure and to gain feedback from the peers. (12) Combination of Some Strategies (3.08) is used to support the speech effectively when one strategy seems not to work well in overcoming the communication problem. It can be conclused that the subjects did not employ L2-based strategies i.e. Circumlocution Word-Coinage and Forenizing because they considered those strategies difficult and they were not familiar with. The most frequently employed strategies were The Use of Fillers/ Hesitation Devices (23.97%) Repetition (15.7%) Message abandonment (15%) and Code Switching (15%). It means that the students often employed communication strategies which did not help them to develop their English because the strategies were not based on their English. They used the communication strategy spontaneously without certain consideration on their English development. It leads to the suggestion that English teachers should provide the use of L2-base communication strategies in their teaching because besides overcoming the communication problem they may also develop the students mastery of English. Students are suggested that they make use of communication strategies that help them overcome their communication hindrance as well as improve their English. It is also suggested further researchers conduct further research on communication strategies and their impact on the learners language development.
