The Scarlet Letter presents exactly such a moral problem related to the main characters behavioural patterns. The classical problem of the community judging one of its derailed members takes place in the novel. This thesis is basically aimed at identifying the behavioural patterns of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter that are reflected in their verbal and actual acts and the behaviours of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter viewed from Puritanism. For the achievement of the objectives the data gained is textual information dealing with the novel The Scarlet Letter. The researcher collected classified and reviewed the data that had been obtained from several sources to provide material for further analysis and description supported by theoretical concepts. The sources were gained from the novel itself books that support the analysis of the study such as Nathaniel Hawthorne s autobiography articles encyclopedias and theories dealing with personality related to the development of the main characters behaviours. It is found that the main female character in the story of the novel is under psychological pressure and reacts in a variety of behavioural patterns. It is also viewed from Puritanism and based on Christian ethics. The only female character who has had many kinds of unpleasant bad and sad experiences can cope with everything by loving and forgiving whereas actually she has given away to temptation and committed adultery being defiant tough independent sincere generous brave and humane. The other main character is the reverend who is the woman fellow-sinner and categorized as a sinning person. The doctor as the woman s legal husband can be said as an evil person.
