Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Key words syllabus development heavy equipment department competence-based syllabus ESP This study aims at developing an English syllabus for the tenth grade students of Heavy Equipment Department to meet the needs of RSBI students school demands and industry demands. In addition the syllabus developed is based on Indonesia education current trend which suggests that character building be included in the English syllabus. The syllabus development based on perception suggestion and information gathered employs a research and development design adapting Borg and Gall s R D framework with five main stages a preliminary study realized through need assessment the syllabus development phase shown through adapting the design development model by Dick and Carey the validation phase field-testing and finalization of the product. The subjects involved in need assessment were the SMK N 1 Singosari Headmaster the Head of Heavy Equipment Department two productive teachers two English teachers three alumni from heavy equipment industry and six students from the eleventh and twelfth grade of Heavy Equipment Department while in validation phase the two experts validated the product and provided beneficial input the two classes of the tenth grade of Heavy Equipment Department and four English teachers were engaged in the field-testing. The data of the needs assessment phase were the basis for developing syllabus in determining indicators and topics and sub topics selecting materials which were pertinent to the student needs developing teaching and learning activities teaching and learning techniques and assessment finding out time allocation and source. The draft of the syllabus validated by experts in the expert judgment phase utilizing a set of questionnaire was field tested. Two macro skills of one basic competence were elaborated into RPP (Lesson Plan). Four English teachers and a staff of the vice principle of the curriculum affairs were involved in the implementation as sources of data. A set of questionnaires was used to collect the data on the strengths and weaknesses of the syllabus. The data were utilized as a basis of quantitative and qualitative feedback for making final revision. The revised syllabus can be applied to the tenth grade students of Heavy Equipment Department and a note provided is taken for improvement.
