Keywords WebQuest writing ability learning materials Writing is one of the language skills that contributes to the successful learning of a language. Based on the preliminary study writing has been overlooked. The most common problem that confronts writing teachers lies on how to motivate the students to write interesting texts. As a result the students ability in constructing the paragraphs is still poor. As an English teacher at MTs. Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng Jombang the writer saw some problems in the teaching and learning process. An informal interview with one of the writer s colleagues who is also an English teacher in the school revealed that the students writing ability is still not well developed yet. The reason according to him was that the students had low motivation to write. One of the students said that he felt writing was hard. Others said that they did not have sufficient materials about to write. Some of them consider writing as an activity they would be glad to escape from or in other words they found that writing was difficult and at the same time depressing. They did not feel confident in their writing and do not encourage themselves to develop their ability in writing. Thus they do not practice this skill unless the teacher asks them to do so. This research is aimed to develop students writing ability using WebQuest as a source of learning materials. The WebQuest is selected since it has a lot of potential for both teachers and learners. The research problem of this study is How can the use of WebQuest develop the students ability in writing a report text and How can the use of WebQuest promote students participation in writing a report text To achieve the purpose the researcher conducted action research that was employed by following four stages planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of the research were 15 students of the ninth grade of MTs Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng Jombang in 2010/2011 academic year. This study was implemented in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The data of the study were gathered through the following instruments observation checklists field notes and students writing products. The data were analyzed to obtain the findings of the research. The findings of the study showed that the appropriate steps used in implementing WebQuest consisted of the following procedures (1) leading students to the topic by giving some questions and showing web addresses related to the topic discussed (2) introducing the WebQuest and distributing the worksheet (3) assigning the students to work in group (4) informing students about the things they should do in their groups (5) asking the students to do task and answer the questions in the worksheet How many stages do these animals have life cycles and Mention the stages of their life cycles (6) asking the students to make sentences based on their information from the web (7) giving a model of report texts and explaining generic structure and generic features (Simple Present Tense action verbs) of report texts (8) assigning the students to write the first draft (9) exchanging the works in group to get feedback by peer-revising (10) giving time to the students to do conference with the teacher and (11) editing the first draft to make the final drafts. The results of the study also revealed that WebQuest had developed the ability of the ninth grade students of MTs Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng in writing report texts. The development was indicated by the increase of students average writing scores from 50.8 in preliminary study 60.26 in the first cycle and 76.8 in the second cycle. Besides the results of the study showed that the students were enthusiastic active and more involved in the teaching and learning process using WebQuest. From the research findings it can be inferred that WebQuest is not only effective in developing the students writing ability but also in enhancing their participation in the learning process. Therefore it is suggested that English teachers apply WebQuest (if the school is facilitated with Internet connection) since it is beneficial in terms of giving the students an easy way to generate ideas to make a meaningful composition. Finally it is suggested that further researchers to conduct research in other design such as experimental research or others in the teaching of writing of report texts. Moreover it is also suggested that future researchers conduct research in the teaching of writing using different genres for instances narrative or recount texts.
