Abstract

Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang Advisors (1) Drs. Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. (2) Dr. Suharmanto Ruslan M.Pd. Keywords Story Mapping Strategy reading comprehension. This study was conducted on the basis of the problem faced by the researcher in the teaching reading comprehension at MAN 2 Marabahan. The fact showed that the students ability in comprehending the English texts were low. Based on the preliminary study out of 14 students only 4 students (29%) passed the minimum passing grade (KKM) (65) while the other 10 students (71%) still couldn t reach the minimum passing grade or their score is under KKM.To cope with the problem the researcher applied the Story Mapping Strategy as one of the strategies in the teaching of reading. This research employs Collaborative Action Research design and aims at improving the reading comprehension ability of the eleventh year students on narratives texts at MAN 2 Marabahan through Story Mapping Strategy. The strategy is selected since it provides a visual framework for understanding identifying and analyzing the elements of a story and it makes the students easier in remembering the story. Further the strategy has been proven through many studies to have been able to improve the students achievement in reading comprehension and involvement in learning process. The subjects of the study were fourteen students of Class XI IPA of MAN 2 Marabahan in the academic year of 2010/2011. The study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of an action research namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle was carried out in two meetings of the strategy implementation and one meeting for the test. The data of the study were gathered using the following instruments observation checklist field notes questionnaire and a reading comprehension test. The finding of the study revealed that the appropriate model of the Story Mapping strategy in teaching reading at MAN 2 Marabahan consists of the following steps in pre-reading phase (1) explaining the teaching learning objectives (2) activating the students prior knowledge by showing related pictures (3) giving leading questions related to the picture (4) asking the students to predict the topic that will be discussed and introducing the topic and (5) dividing the students into groups in whilst-reading phase (1) introducing the text/story to be read and provide each student with a blank Story Map (2) giving model how to read the text (3) asking the students to read the text and find out the meaning of difficult words (4) asking the students to record the title of the assigned text on the Story Map (5) asking the students to analyze and record the other components of the story such as characters setting plot (problem/goal events/ episodes resolution/outcome) and theme/moral message by discussing with their group (6) asking the students to fill the Story Map with those information (7) asking the students to present their work in front of the class and (8) asking the students to do another task related to material with their pairs and post-reading phase (1) giving a quiz (comprehension questions) to students individually (2) giving feedback of their performance (3) asking the students about the difficulties of the lesson and (4) giving reflection. Furthermore the finding of the study also indicated that the Story Mapping Strategy had improved the students reading comprehension. This study is considered successful when 70% or more of the students can reach the gain improvement at least 10 points higher than the result of preliminary study. After the researcher conducted the first and second cycles the result showed that the students score improved. In the first cycle there were 8 (57%) students out of 14 students who achieved the gain improvement of 8805 10 points. Meanwhile in the second cycle students who could reach the gain improvement of 8805 10 points increase to 11 students (78%). Besides the finding also indicated that the Story Mapping Strategy was successful in enhancing the students to be actively involved in the class. Based on the findings four suggestions are presented. First it is suggested to students to utilize this strategy as their learning strategy in reading English texts especially in comprehending narrative texts. Second it is recommended for English teachers to use the Story Mapping Strategy as an alternative strategy in the teaching and learning of reading comprehension. Third it is suggested to school principals to provide facilities to improve the students ability in learning English especially reading. And the last it is suggested to future researchers to carry out a similar study on the same or different skill (listening speaking or writing skill) in different setting or for other text types like expository such as biographies and autobiographies. They may also carry out research using Story Mapping Strategy with different research design.
