Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Johannes A. Prayogo M.Pd M.Ed. (II) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd M.A Ph.D. Key words reading comprehension narrative text online short stories. Narrative text is one of text types learned by the eighth graders of Junior High School. This text comprises more complex text structure than other texts namely orientation complication sequence of events resolution and coda. Moreover this material is interesting as it covers moral values in which the students can learn about social life near or far from their environment. These materials can be obtained from many sources like story books and the Internet that has been developing rapidly. Dealing with the idea in benefiting Internet for learning language the study was focused on examining how using Online Short Stories (OSS) as an instructional medium and materials can improve reading comprehension. The Online Short Stories was chosen as they are appropriate for the students of eighth grade in terms of language use length of the text and topics. Besides images and sound come with the texts in which the readers can apply their own strategies such as prediction and making notes as their pace and ability. Those ready used materials were taken from British Council and Rong Chang sites. The OSS was used in both intensive and extensive reading activities combined with five worksheets that consist of guiding questions on comprehension. The first was Self Monitoring Card which employs 5W H questions for finding a main idea. Secondly Key Concept was a table to list the sequence of events that happened in the story. Thirdly Story Map was used to understand the organization of the text. These were used for intensive reading and completed with Reading Journal and Reading Log that were compiled into a record book for extensive reading. This combination was implemented in both cooperative and individual learning which facilitates students to improve their social skill as well as their responsibility for independent learning. In this study the researcher applied classroom action research (CAR) that involved two collaborators in handling the study from the beginning to the end because the subjects eighth graders of MTsN-2 Palangka Raya were not the researcher s students. The research was carried out in two cycles that consisted of seven meetings. The data were collected through some instruments namely worksheets reading tests observation checklists field notes and questionnaire. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the research showed that OSS strategy was worthy to improve the students reading comprehension. Their reading skill developed mainly in finding main idea and detail information and breaking down the text structure. This can be seen from the students score that improved from 51.1 in the preliminary test to 72.1 in Cycle 1 up to 75.7 in Cycle 2. Their participation in the classroom increased although it was intentionally enhanced by teacher s efforts. Besides the students awareness of their own strategy for online reading based on their pace and ability also increased. The result of extensive reading indicated that the students responsibility was enhanced although it was for the sake of score. During Cycle 1 there were 9 students who submitted their extensive reading record book on time or 2 to 3 days late in the first week then 11 students in the second week and 15 students in the third week. The number increased in the next two weeks. There were 28 students showed their good responsibility in the fourth week and 33 students in the fifth week. The number of the stories they have read varied from 4 to 8 titles. From the findings it can be concluded that the combination of OSS as medium and materials and worksheets that are implemented in cooperative learning practice improves the students comprehension in reading narrative texts. This also triggers the students curiosity to explore stories within various topics in groups pairs and individual. The students involvement in learning process is encouraged by the provision of the interactivity chance between students and computer as well as the information presented in the web. Thus this combined strategy works well on the active students who have high social skill in which they can interact freely with others. Besides those who have great willingness to have independent study are greatly advised. It is then recommended that the future researchers explore more on the use of OSS for speaking and writing and use the findings as reference.
