Abstract

Key words process writing approach writing recount text This study was intended to improve the ability of the eighth graders of MTs Muhammadiyah 02 Pubian Central Lampung in writing a recount text by using process writing approach. The research problem formulated in this study was How can process writing approach improve the ability of the eighth graders of MTs Muhammadiyah 02 Pubian Central Lampung in writing a recount text The design of the study was collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in designing lesson plan determining the criteria of success implementing and observing the actions making reflection on the data obtained from the teaching and learning process. The action research was conducted through the following procedure (1) planning of the action (2) implementing of the action (3) observing the action and (4) analyzing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were the eighth graders of MTs Muhammadiyah 02 Pubian Central Lampung at the second semester in 2010-2011 academic year. The number of the students in the class was 30 students. The instruments used in this study were observation checklists field notes writing test and scoring rubric. The appropriate model of process writing approach in the teaching of writing recount texts encompasses five procedures. First prewriting giving the students picture series asking the students related to the picture giving the students the model of an outline of recount text using the students answer giving the students another set of picture series and asking the students to make an outline of recount text based on the picture. Second drafting giving the model of recount text based on the outline made in the prewriting stage leading the students to understand the text in terms of generic structure and language features asking the students to write a draft of recount text based on the outline they made in the prewriting stage. Third revising giving the students revising guideline giving the example of revising in the form of outline giving the students the revising exercise and asking the students to revise their draft and rewrite it. Fourth editing giving the students editing guideline giving the students the example of editing asking the students to do editing exercise and asking the students to edit their draft and rewrite it. Fifth publishing asking the students to publish their final writing by reading aloud. This study was conducted in two Cycles each of which consisted of three meetings. In Cycle 1 meeting 1 was prewriting and drafting. It was done on January 24th 2011. Meeting 2 was revising. It was done on January 25th 2011. Meeting 3 was editing and publishing. It was done on January 31st 2011. In Cycle 2 meeting 1 was prewriting and drafting. It was done on February 7th 2011. Meeting 2 was revising. It was done on February 8th 2011. Meeting 3 was editing and publishing. It was done on February 14th 2011. The finding of the study revealed that process writing approach was successful in improving the ability of the eighth graders of MTs Muhammadiyah 02 Pubian Central Lampung in writing a recount text. The number of the students who got score 8805 60 increased from 15 students in Cycle 1 up to 22 students Cycle 2. The percentage of the students participation also increased from 65% in cycle 1 up to 83% in cycle 2. Referring to the findings of the study it is suggested to the English teachers to apply process writing approach in their writing class. However the teachers should consider an appropriate model of process writing approach to be applied in order to provide the students with exciting learning experiences. For the future researchers who will conduct the same study it is recommended to conduct a study using process writing approach with some differences in terms of text types instructional media and the procedure of the presentation of process writing approach.
