Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching Graduate Program of State University of Malng. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Siusana Kwedju M.Pd. (II) Prof. M. Adnan Latief M.A. Ph.D. Key words reading comprehension reciprocal teaching method. Reading is one of language skills taught most compared to the other skills. Even though reading is dominant in English classroom the result of the students reading test is unsatisfactory. This happens to be the case found in MAS Aisyiyah Binjai where most students still encounter difficulty dealing with English reading test. The students still have difficulties in comprehending the text. Therefore this problem needs to be solved. Moreover the study in improving students comprehension is needed. The objective of the study is to describe the implementation of reciprocal teaching method to improve students reading comprehension ability in finding the message of the text and language features. In the reciprocal teaching method activity the students are trained to comprehend the content area of the expository texts using four main strategies (predicting clarifying questioning and summarizing). They work in the group. This method was implemented to Grade 12 Students of MAS Aisyiyah Binjai academic year of 2010/2011. This study is classroom action research with a collaborative design. The procedures of the research consisted of four main steps. They are planning implementing observing and reflecting through cycles. Since the criteria of success were reached in the cycle 1 this study was conducted in one cycle in order to it did not need a re-diagnostic act. It consisted of five meetings. They are four meetings for implementing reciprocal teaching method and one meeting is to reading comprehension test. The instruments were a reading comprehension test observation checklist and field-notes. The first criterion of success was determined based on the improvement of the students reading comprehension test. The criteria of success were set by the score 8805 60.00. The implementation was successful if 100% of the students got the score 8805 60.00. The second criterion of success was determined based on the students involvement in the activities during implementing of reciprocal teaching method. it was achieved when 50% of the students could make a prediction two clarification two questions and a summary The findings showed that the students scores in reading comprehension test improved. The data showed that the average score in reading comprehension test was improved from 40.27 to 68.06. The improvement was 27.79. Furthermore the data also showed that there was no one of students got the score 60.00. It showed that the criteria of success had met. The findings also showed that the implementation of the Reciprocal Teaching method made the students actively involved in teaching learning process. The data showed in meeting 4 that there were 86.00% of students made a prediction 91.66% of students make at least two clarifications of difficult words 83.33% of students generate their own questions related to the text they read and 80.55% of students made a summary of the text. With the findings it can be inferred that the Reciprocal Teaching Method has proven to be able to improve the students reading comprehension achievement and the students involvement in the reading class activities. The Reciprocal Teaching Method that was implemented in the teaching reading encompasses the following procedures (1) leading the students to the topic by asking some questions (2) teaching and modeling the four key strategies of reciprocal teaching method to students (3) dividing the students into groups consisted of 4-5 students (4) distributed a text to the students a. assigning the students to make prediction based on the clues in the clues in the text b. clarifying difficult words that they find in the text c. generating some questions related to the information in the text d. summarizing the text (5) assigning the students to answer the questions related to the text (6) asking the students to conclude the lesson. Finally it is suggested that the teachers who have the same problem with the researcher adapt the reciprocal teaching method in their teaching to improve students reading comprehension. It is also suggested that the teachers of MA/Senior High School utilize the reciprocal teaching method in help of them comprehend texts. It is also suggested that further researchers use the result of this research as a reference.
