Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. Keywords personal photographs process writing writing ability. Writing ability is an ability to express as well as organize ideas into written forms using the correct grammar vocabulary and mechanics. The students writing ability at MTs Ma arif Jatinangor Sumedang in fact was poor in both ideas and language. The teacher herself usually used monotonous technique she never applied the process writing and rarely used the media in the classroom. Since the idea is an initial aspect the students need to possess to begin writing personal photographs as media and source materials were selected to help the students generate and organize ideas in planning activity. In view of this the study aimed at describing how personal photographs in process writing approach can be used to improve the students writing ability of the eighth graders of MTs Ma arif Jatinangor Sumedang especially in terms of content and organization. The researcher employed a classroom action research. During the two cycles with three meetings of each the researcher and her collaborator conducted the four stages of planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects were 42 eighth graders of MTs Ma arif Jatinangor Sumedang in 2010/2011 academic year. The data were gathered through the observation checklists field notes questionnaire and students final writing. The findings of the study showed that the applicable procedures of teaching writing using personal photographs covered the following activities (1) leading the students to generate ideas from their personal photographs (2) guiding the students construct sentences based on the ideas generated (3) assigning the students to write their first drafts (4) modeling revising the content and organization (5) assigning the students to revise their own drafts (6) exchanging the student s own with peer s draft to be responded (7) doing conferences with the individuals or groups on revising process (8) assigning the students to rewrite their drafts based on the feedback from their peer and the teacher (9) modeling editing the language (10) assigning the students to edit their own draft (11) exchanging the drafts to be edited by peers (12) doing conferences with individuals or groups on editing process (13) assigning the students to rewrite their final drafts. These procedures worked well to be applied in more than one meeting. Through the above teaching procedures the study showed that the use of personal photographs in process writing approach can improve the students writing ability of the eighth graders of MTs Ma arif Jatinangor Sumedang especially in terms of content and organization. In terms of content the students achieved score 45 in preliminary study 61 and 69 in the two cycles respectively. Likewise in terms of organization they achieved score increasingly from 45 in preliminary study to 58 in Cycle one and 68 in Cycle two. The students average score in Cycle two achieved 68.54 and none gained less than 10 points. Besides the result of the study showed the students enthusiasm and activeness in the writing activity and their positive responses toward the use of personal photographs in the teaching of writing. Based on the findings of the study it can be concluded that using personal photographs in process writing is effective to improve the students writing ability in terms of content and organization. Hence it is advisable for the English teachers who apply this strategy to design the lesson plan explicitly to create the worksheet clearly to group the students based on their characteristics to give modeling to give clarity by using examples and to employ the process writing for a better outcome. For future researcher they are suggested to conduct the similar study on different kinds of genre such as recount and narrative texts. Moreover the use of personal photographs might also be used in the teaching of other productive skill that is speaking.
