Advisors (1) Dr. Emalia Iragiliati M.Pd (2) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd M.A. Ph.D Key Words Discussion Board Writing Skill Internet based teaching has been popular and widely used in this era. The use of Internet as the teaching aid can be an alternative in order to facilitate students learning. Discussion board as one of the media in the Internet can be one of the solutions to overcome the students problem in writing. This medium is chosen based on its strength in providing the students to be actively involved in the writing practice. The students are able to give feedback comments and suggestions to their classmates writing. This study is aimed to improve the students skill in writing a recount text through the use of discussion board. The preliminary study showed that the skill in writing a recount text of the eighth grade students of MTSN Model Pandeglang 1 was not sufficient. The ability of the students in writing was still low. The students average score was 50.48 or only 29.63% of the students got the score higher than the score of the minimum passing criteria (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum/ KKM) that was 65. It was identified that the cause of the problem was the inadequacy of the students background knowledge on the topic to be described. The researcher planned to overcome the problem by implementing a strategy namely discussion board to improve the skill of the eighth graders in writing a recount text. This study employed Collaborative Classroom Action Research Design. The researcher worked together with the class teacher as the collaborator in designing the lesson plan implementing the action observing the action and making reflection. This study was carried out in one cycle. The cycle consisted of five meetings. The first meeting focused on the preparation to use discussion board including the registration process for the students in using discussion board the second meeting focused on prewriting and drafting that was done in pairs the third meeting focused on the revising editing and publishing stage the fourth meeting focused on prewriting and drafting for individual activity the fifth meeting focused on revising editing and publishing for individual activity. The subjects of the study were class VIII-A of MTsN Model Pandeglang 1 in the 2010-2011 academic year consisting 27 students. The data of the study were taken from the observation checklist field notes questionnaire and the students final product on writing a recount text. The findings of the study revealed that the discussion board was successful in improving the skill in writing a recount text of the eighth grade students of MTSN Model Pandeglang 1. The improvement was indicated by the increase of the students writing scores the students participation in writing activities and the students responses after the implementation of discussion board. Relating to the students final product it was determined in the first criterion of success that 70 % of the students should get the score equal or greater than 65. The writing scores of the students in the first cycle was achieved the first criterion of success in which 81.48% (22 out of 27) of the students got score of 65 or more. From the result of observation checklist and field notes it revealed that discussion board could enhance the students participation in which most of them were actively involved in the teaching and learning activities. About 82.30% of the students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process. From the result of questionnaire it was found that about 84.70% of the students have a positive response after the implementation of discussion board. Referring to the findings of the study the English teachers are suggested to apply discussion board in writing class. However the teachers should consider the appropriate model of discussion board to be applied in order to provide the students with exciting learning experience. The future researchers who will conduct the same field of study are recommended to conduct the study using discussion board in terms of text types use another research design for example experimental or causal design and consider the students level.
