Abstract

M.A. Ph.D Key words development writing high school students There are advantages that students may get when they are able to write English well. In relation to the advantages SMAK St. Albertus Malang has decided to run a special writing course for the students. The students are expected to be able to write 1000 word essay at the end of their study time in the school. To achieve this the students must have read a lot and be able to express an idea logically and coherently. However it is not an easy job to carry out the program. Students still often fail in expressing their ideas in written form. In dealing with this problem this research was conducted. This research was designed and conducted to develop appropriate materials for English writing class for the tenth graders of SMAK St. Albertus Malang. The materials can then be used in the teaching of writing. Thus in addition to this main report a writing materials entitled Let s Write Joyfully and its teacher s book have also been developed as an integral part of the study. The materials was written under the following criteria (a) it was written based on the School Based Curriculum prescribed by the government and the result of the needs assessment (b) it was authentic in terms of texts and tasks meaning that the materials were intended to enable the students to write essays on topics related to curriculum competently and (c) it was arranged in such a way that by the end of the course the students were able to write essays. In the development of the instructional materials the modified version of Dick and Carey (2001) model was employed. A try-out of the materials that involved a teacher and students was conducted to see the efficiency when applied in the classroom. Copies of the materials accompanied with questionnaires were distributed to the teacher and a group of students who were randomly selected as respondents. They were asked for their opinion and judgments concerning the materials effectiveness in helping them develop their abilities to write essays. An observation form and a questionnaire were made to find out the subjects comments and suggestions. The questionnaire was given to the subjects and intended to find out whether the instructional materials developed met their needs and were at an appropriate level of difficulty. Fourteen multiple choice items were written in the questionnaire and directed to elicit the applicability of the materials in terms of level of difficulties usefulness effectiveness and attractiveness. The observation form was given to the teacher to find out whether or not the materials developed suited students needs and were at the appropriate level of difficulty. The results of the data analysis indicate that from the expert s point of view the materials were considered good. It happened after several consultations. From the teacher s point of view the materials were quite applicable for the tenth graders of SMAK St. Albertus Malang. The topics were interesting and the tasks and the language used were at the appropriate level of difficulty. From the students opinions the materials were judged to be applicable for use as a materials for writing. It met the students needs and interests in the sense that it could develop their language skills and their knowledge. The questionnaire and observation revealed that the materials needed some revisions. The revision was on the unattractiveness the explanation of grammar review the suitability of the exercises typing of the examples and the language of the instruction to avoid ambiguity. From the results of the data analysis it can be concluded that the materials developed is good and can be used as materials for teaching writing in SMAK St. Albertus Malang. Finally it is suggested that the materials be used in the teaching writing process. The students can use it as their material for learning to write. The teachers can use the materials for teaching the students. The school can use the product to facilitate the students to learn to write better and other researchers can use the result of the study for further research.
