Abstract

Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Monica Djoehana D. Oka M.A. (II) Dr. Suharmanto Ruslan M.Pd. Keywords reading comprehension narrative texts collaborative strategic reading. This study was designed to improve the students reading comprehension by using collaborative strategic reading. It was conducted in order to find a strategy of teaching and learning that occurs especially in the teaching reading. The strategy was selected because it was believed to be able to stimulate or activate the students to be more involved in the reading activities and to facilitate the students to comprehend the text especially narrative texts. Thus this study was directed to solve practical problems in the teaching and learning process. The research problem was formulated as follows How can Collaborative Strategic Reading improve the eighth graders reading comprehension at MTsN Sungai Pandan South Kalimantan The study employed a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborator as research team worked together designing the lesson plan implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. The subjects of this study were 30 students of the eighth grader at MTsN Sungai Pandan South Kalimantan in the 2010/2011 academic year. This research study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. First Cycle covered three meetings to implement the strategy and one meeting for the reading comprehension test. Second Cycle encompassed two meetings of the strategy implementation and one meeting for the reading comprehension test. The data of this research study were obtained through observation checklist and field notes at the teaching and learning process and reading test at the end of the cycle. The findings of this study showed that the collaborative strategic reading strategy can improve the students reading comprehension in narrative texts in terms of determining the topic of the text finding the meaning of difficult words and finding the main idea. The improvement can be seen from the increase of students gain score from preliminary study to Cycle 2. The percentage of students gain score had improved greatly in the preliminary study from 36% of 30 students to 53.3% in Cycle 1 and 77% in Cycle 2. The result indicated higher than predetermined criteria of success that was 70% of 30 students who got 15 points or greater. Based on the result of Cycle 2 the next cycle did not need to be conducted because the students scores that had already been predetermined in the criteria of success have been met in the Cycle 2. Dealing with the study it is also observed on the students participation (involvement) in the teaching and learning process that most of the students (71.9%) participated actively in the second meeting of Cycle 2 which was shown by the observation checklist and field notes. The appropriate procedure of collaborative strategic reading in teaching reading comprehension encompassed the following (a) Preview (1) brainstorming the text by seeing the pictures and the title to find the topic (2) discussing and sharing the ideas to determine the best topic (3) predicting the topic that will be learnt (4) sharing to find the best prediction. (b) Click and clunk (5) identifying the difficult or unknown words in the text (6) guiding the students to use context clues strategy to overcome their clunks (7) sharing in group to determine the best meaning of the words. (c) Get the gist (8) identifying the text and guiding them to find the important idea (the main idea) of each paragraph of the text by using paragraph shrinking (9) sharing in group to find the best main idea of each paragraph. (d) Wrap-up guiding the students to review the whole text by summarizing the important ideas of the text/the story (11) sharing to find the best review and (12) answering the comprehension questions in group related to the text to check the understanding of the text. Based on the students achievement using CSR in comprehending English texts (narrative texts) it was suggested for the English teachers to apply collaborative strategic reading as one of many alternatives that can be used in teaching reading. For institution CSR strategy can be new strategy that can improve the students reading comprehension of the eighth graders at MTsN Sungai Pandan South Kalimantan. For the students the result of this study can give contribution to the improvement of learning to comprehend the texts for the eighth grader students of MTsN Sungai Pandan South Kalimantan. Finally for the other researcher teachers particularly those who are interested in applying CSR in their research and implement this strategy in the teaching of reading to other English text types (descriptive recount report and procedure). Besides the implementation of a particular strategy in reading classes by using collaborative strategic reading in classroom action research (CAR) design can be their reference in conducting in the same strategy.
