Abstract

Key Words writing ability descriptive text shared writing The research is based on the teacher experience in teaching writing and also the preliminary study which was conducted in MTs Al Fathoni Poncokusumo Malang. Most of the students scores on writing were still under the minimum passing criteria. Besides the students often got confused to produce a writing task and were afraid of making mistakes because of the different concept of sentence structure between English and their native language. The result of the preliminary study revealed that the causes of the students inability in writing were (1) the problem in structure and form of English sentences (2) the problem on spelling and vocabulary mastery (3) the difficulty in finding an idea on writing. Those problems arose because the teacher seems not to use an appropriate strategy in teaching writing. Supported by some theories and some previous studies in teaching writing the researcher proposes shared writing strategy to solve the students problem in writing. In this research the researcher focuses on overcoming students problem in making good and correct sentences. Then the research problem is formulated as follows How can shared writing strategy improve the skill of writing descriptive texts of the seventh graders at MTs Al-Fathoni Poncokusumo Malang . The Objective of the research is to improve the skill in writing descriptive text of the seventh graders of MTs Al Fathoni Poncokusumo Malang using shared writing strategy. The research employed collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborator teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan implementing the action doing observations and making reflection. The subjects of this research were the students of grade VII of MTs Al Fathoni Poncokusumo Malang on the academic year of 2010/2011. The research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of planning implementing observing and reflecting. While to collect the data the researcher used the following instruments field notes questionnaire and a writing test. The findings of the research showed that the implementation of shared writing strategy in teaching descriptive writing to the seventh graders proved to be effective in improving students scores. Yet the teacher should follow a particular procedure as building knowledge of the field modeling joint construction and independent construction of text. Besides the picture as the media of teaching descriptive text can be very helpful to the student. The improvement of students score was indicated by the increase of students score percentage from the preliminary study Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. There are 10 out of 39 students or 26% of the students total number who got score above the minimum passing criteria in the preliminary study. This number increased to 19 students or 49% after the first cycle has been implemented. Finally having carried out the second cycle there are 29 out of 39 students or 74% of the students total number reach the minimum passing criteria. Based on the findings some suggestions are proposed. It is recommended to the English teachers to apply the strategy of teaching writing using shared writing strategy by considering the students characteristic and also the school condition. Then for future researchers it is suggested to conduct a similar study in other schools with different grade of students and different genres for the improvement of the teaching of English writing.
