Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Teaching. State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. (II) Prof. Dr. Soenardi Djiwandono. Key words speaking ability Junior High School display question The aim of this study is to improve the students speaking ability of the eighth grade students of MTs. Negeri Kediri West Lombok through the Display Questions Technique. The research design used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The findings of this study are based on the students speaking performance and the observation of teaching-learning process using the Display Question Technique. Meanwhile the students raw scores are analyzed in terms of descriptive statistics on the minimum scores the maximum scores the mean and standard deviation and the observation of teaching-learning process is analyzed based on the observation checklist and the field note. The study also analyzes the students performance in speaking especially in relation to the achievement towards the criteria of success. About 23 students were involved as the target of the present study. The achievement of students speaking towards the criteria of success seems improving from the pre-test to Cycle 1 and from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. In the pre-test there are 3 students (13.04%) who get the final score 8805 4 or the grade Fair . In Cycle 1 there are 14 students or 63.63 % who get this score and in Cycle 2 there are 21 students or 91.30 % who get the score. The criteria of success states that 75% of students who get the final score 8805 4 or the grade Fair in speaking performance when expressing ideas related to simple short descriptive monologs.
