Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English LanguageEducation Teaching Faculty of Letters Stated University of Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Hj. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd (2). Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo M.A. Key words writing ability procedure texts and the process approach. The research purpose is to improve students ability in writing procedure texts of first year of MTs Noor Rochmat Lawang-Malang-East Java through process approach. The design of the study was action research consisting of 4 stages namely planning the action implementation observation the action and reflection on the action to decided whether the implementation was successful or not. The finding in the preliminary study showed that only two students obtained score of 60 as the minimum criteria. The subject of the study was class VII consisting of 29 students. Four instruments were used to collect the data i.e. observation checklist field notes questionnaire and a writing test. The criteria of success of this study were first 70% or more of the students participate in the teaching and learning process second at least 50% of the students obtain a score of equal to or more than 60 and third 70% of the students or more have good responses to the implementation of the process approach. The appropriate procedures in implementing the process approach in teaching writing were dividing the students into groups distributing picture series for modeling the students worksheet and media assigning the students to generate ideas assigning the students to put the ideas into paragraph assigning the students to revise the draft in terms of content and organization assigning the students to edit the revised draft in terms of grammar vocabulary spelling capitalization and punctuation asking the students to write their final product. At each step modeling is provided. The finding of the study indicated that in Cycle I have not all already met the criteria of success. Concerning the first criterion 70% of the students did at least 64.3% of the activities and in Cycle II indicated 78.5% has already met the criteria of success. In the connection with the second criterion 65.5% (19 students) of the students obtained a score of equal to or more than 60 the study has met criteria of success but needed improving. In Cycle II the finding study indicated 95% of the students (28 students) the study has met criteria of success. In relation to the last criterion at least 82% of the students (24 students) provided positive responses the implementation of the process approach as indicated by the result of the questionnaire. Based on the findings the English teachers of MTs Noor Rochmat Lawang-Malang-East Java are suggested that they apply the procedure developed in this study in the teaching of writing procedure text. The students are suggested that they apply the process approach in writing. In addition it is suggested that in designing syllabus the teacher include the process approach in writing the teaching and learning process.
