Abstract

Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Teaching State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip.TESL M.Pd (II) Prof. Kasihani K.E Suyanto M.A. Ph.D Key Words Comprehension Narrative Text Jigsaw II Strategy. The objective of the study was to know whether the Jigsaw II can improve the 11th Graders reading comprehension of the Social Program at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Muhammadiyah Metro. The subject of the study was 16 students which include 5 male and 11 female students. Based on the preliminary study in August 2010 it was found out that the students ability to comprehend texts were not satisfactory. More than half of the students obtained scores under the minimum adequacy criteria or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) which was 65 for reading skill. This is a collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher and his collaborator cooperatively design the lesson plans implementing the actions observing the effect of action and reflecting the results of the actions. In conducting the research the researcher was a practitioner and while the collaborator became the observer. The students worked cooperatively in jigsaw groups as well as expert groups. The students can read the whole text but each jigsaw student was assigned a different element of the text. The division of the text elements was Orientation Complication and Resolution. The students taught one another in their jigsaw groups and discussed the information found in the expert groups. The study was undertaken in three cycles by following the action research procedure i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each Cycle was conducted in four meetings. The data of the research was gathered using observation checklists interview guide field notes and reading comprehension quizzes. The findings of the research revealed that Jigsaw II can improve the students reading comprehension ability when it is implemented as follows (1) the teacher activates the prior knowledge of the students about the narrative texts (2) the teacher explains the procedure of Jigsaw II Strategy (3) the teacher clarifies the students role in jigsaw group as well as expert group (4) the teacher gives the reading material and asks students to read it (5) the teacher guides students to discuss the difficult words and the content of the text (6) the teacher gives students discussion schemes 1 (7) the teacher guides students to have presentation 1 in their jigsaw groups (8) the students group themselves into their expert groups (9) the teacher gives discussion schemes 2 to the students (10) the students make presentation 2 in their expert groups (11) the students regroup themselves into their jigsaw group (12) the students do presentation 3 in their jigsaw groups (13) the jigsaw groups discuss the gathered information (14) the students do presentation 4 to the class (15) the teacher has the students do the reading comprehension quiz (16) the teacher determines the students scores.
