Abstract

Keywords English Speaking Simulation speaking ability Referring to the researcher s experience in the teaching of speaking and the preliminary study the researcher found some problems namely the students speaking ability was poor and their average score was 51.8 and their motivation to study was low. It happened due to the teacher used monotonous technique in teaching speaking. To overcome these problems the researcher proposed one strategy in the teaching of speaking that is English Speaking Simulation. This research was designed to improve the students speaking ability using English Speaking Simulation. The research was intended to explain how English Speaking Simulation Strategy can improve the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng Jombang. The research was classroom action research in which the researcher and the observer worked together in conducting this study. The researcher acted as the teacher while the observer observed the teacher and the implementation English Speaking Simulation. This research was conducted in two cycles using the following procedures planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data of the research were collected through the following instruments - observation checklist field notes and questionnaire. The subjects of this research were 30 students of the eleventh grade students of MA Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng Jombang. The finding of the research revealed that the appropriate model of role play as strategy to teach speaking includes the following procedures. (1) brainstorming about an issue relates to students daily life such as the best SIM card (2) telling students what is going to be done (3) dividing students into groups of five (4) giving the cue card to each group (5) giving them model of conversation (6) asking them to simulate the speaking of asking and giving suggestion opinion or agreement in a group and (7) asking them to simulate the speaking of asking and giving suggestion opinion or agreement by competing with other groups. English Speaking Simulation has proven effective to improve the students ability in speaking at MA Madrasatul Qur an Tebuireng Jombang. At the first cycle the average score was 52.4. Then at the second cycle the average score for final draft was 67.83. The students average score is greater than 65 in their final performance. Furthermore most of the students were actively participated in joining speaking class. Besides they showed positive responses toward the implementation of English Speaking Simulation and recommended the use of English Speaking Simulation strategy for the future speaking activities. It is suggested that English teachers apply English Speaking Simulation since it can be practical contribution on how to make the students feel enthusiastic and active in the speaking class. And for the future researchers the findings of this research can become a good reference as strategy to teach speaking.
