Abstract

English Language Education Graduate Program State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. (II) Prof. Drs. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd M.A Ph.D. Keywords specific use semantic relation WordNet concordance application. Studying words through WordNet is an effective technique because words in WordNet are systematically arranged throughout the meanings relation among the different words. This technique will help the English teachers find the appropriate and the correct words to use in conveying their messages since the meanings relation in WordNet settles on words that belong to general and specific meaning in the hierarchical structure. However the hierarchical structure of words in WordNet and its usage in a specific context do not provide lucid difference. The use of the specific corpus taken from the same types of texts can help resolve the differences and similarities of meanings and the words usage included in the hierarchical structure in WordNet. This thesis investigates the distinctions of the verbs usage (examine investigate and explore) which are employed in the similar context stating the research purposes of the article abstracts then examines the distinctions between Internationally Published Research Abstracts (IPRA) and Indonesian Based Research Abstracts (IBRA) and finally explores the appropriateness of the verbs usage on the basis of corpus analysis. The article abstracts as the data in this research count 1200 abstracts focused on the context of education. The abstracts were collected from 8 IBRA and 7 IPRA journals from which 1200 abstracts were singled out for both journals. The volumes of the journals were selected using a convenient sampling since not all volumes of the journals were taken. This was merely for the practicality of the hugeness sampling that should be taken into consideration. The analysis method employed was content or text analysis included quantitative and qualitative analysis. In the quantitative stage the texts were analysed on the basis of the word occurrences and then the percentage of the usages would be obtained. The next stage was qualitative analysis with which the use and the meaning of the words employed either in the highest or lowest occurrences and its inclination or meaning emphasis would be interpreted. The results of the study reveal that quantitatively the use of the three verbs in to infinitive sentence structure has different patterns in both journals although there is insignificant difference of the occurrences. While the order of occurrences in IPRA is as follows to explore to examine and to investigate in IBRA to investigate to explore and to examine. In Main Verbs sentence structure IPRA shows similar patterns as in IBRA with the following order examines explores and investigates. The percentage of verb usages between IPRA and IBRA shows differences IPRA uses examine/s/d (43%) explore/s/d (31%) and investigate/s/d (26%) while IBRA uses investigate/s/d (36%) examine/s/d (33%) and explore/s/d (31%). In the qualitative analysis the Main Verbs sentence structure of IPRA shows that the sentences are constructed in more effective and directed since they do not take much be (auxiliary and supporting verbs) and collocate with purpose. From this analysis it is found that there are similarities and differences in the use of examines investigate and explore. In IPRA the three verbs are used interchangeably in the contexts or meanings of Relationship Influence and Evaluation. However examine gives a special emphasis meaning which refers to evaluation and measurement or testing the given facts while explore emphasizes the meaning of seeking out the research components which have better or more valuable than other components and the last verb investigate is used to obtain new information or new components in the research and it will be identified in the research findings. The implication of the study is that as English teachers they are supposed to be sensitive and aware of the synonymous words of English since English language is very familiar with synonyms. Even if some synonyms can be treated and used interchangeably others need specific treatment and usage since they are different in certain aspects. English teachers who are encouraging their students to use words diversely and synonyms properly to avoid generalizing the synonyms are suggested to apply WordNet 2.1 and Wordsmith 5.0.
