Abstract

Key words instructional materials materials development Agronomy department. This study aims at developing English instructional materials for the first- year students of Agronomy. The developed materials were made because of the lack of English materials especially for agriculture schools. The available materials were usually for vocational schools majoring in engineering and economics. The study employed Research and Development (R and D) design. To obtain the information needed as a base for developing materials an informal observation was done. In addition needs analysis was carried out by having a checklist of a book used by the teacher. Besides the teacher was interviewed and 68 students of two classes from Agronomy department were asked to answer the questionnaires. The procedures employed in this study were doing needs analysis developing the materials conducting validation including expert validation and trying-out the materials. In doing needs analysis interview was given to the teacher and questionnaires were distributed to the students while expert judgment was done by giving questionnaire to the experts. Questionnaires were also given to the students after the materials were tried out. The result of needs analysis showed that the students needed English instructional materials that had colourful pictures and photos to make them easier to understand the materials and the materials should be relevant to their major content subject Agronomy. Besides the data gathered from expert judgment indicated that some revision should be done for the developed materials. In trying-out of the developed materials the data were taken by doing observation and giving questionnaires to students. The observation showed that students were actively involved in the learning and teaching process. They were interested in the topics because they related to the students major content subject. In addition the result of questionnaires showed that most of the students stated that the developed materials were very useful to improve their English and to support the productive subjects. Based on the result of the try-out some revisions were made to improve the quality the materials to match the needs of the students. The success in using the developed materials as shown in the try-out should be continued by other English teachers the school/institution material developers and other researchers. The English teachers can make use the developed materials as an alternative source of materials. They can also use it as a model to develop materials for other departments or other skill programs. Besides for the school principal it is hoped that he can facilitate the teacher to publish the developed materials for the internal use. For materials developers the result of this study can be used as a model to develop the other materials by considering the students context. For other researchers this developed materials can be used as a model to conduct the same research for different levels or other departments.
