Abstract

Graduate Program in English Language Education Department State University of Malang. Advisors (I) A. Effendi Kadarisman M.A. Ph.D. (II). Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminaten M.Pd. Key Words Supplementary materials writing ability functional text The objective of the study is to develop supplementary writing materials for the seventh-grade RSBI students of junior high school. It based on the finding taken from the students needs of the seventh-grade RSBI students at SMPN 1 Bondowoso it is found that the problem faced by the students is the low ability to write in English. Moreover the writing materials in the existing book used by the school are too limited in scope to enable them to write. Therefore this study was conducted for the purpose of developing the supplementary materials for writing. The design of the development is research and development with the adaptation of the development proposed by Dick and Carey (2001) and Sugiyono (2008) resulting in a new procedure using 6 steps. They were (1) doing needs analysis (2) stating instructional goals (3) developing instructional materials (4) doing expert validation (5) try-out and (6) writing the final product. In the expert validation and try-out checklists and field notes were used as the instrument to record the feedback for revision. The developed materials which consist of five units contain the standard competence and basic competence taken from the standard of content in the kurikulum SMP-SBI (2007). The arrangement of the instructional materials is adapted from the stages of teaching-learning cycle by Feez in Hyland (2003 138) covering building knowledge of the Field (BKOF) modeling of the text (MOT) join construction of the text (JCOT) and independent construction of the text (ICOT) to suit the needs of the individual learners. The developed materials were then evaluated by two experts. The evaluation showed that besides the good points there were still a number of weak points. The weak ones were revised according to the feedback and suggestions from the experts. In the try out it was obvious that the students were very active in following the whole process of teaching and learning. Based on the feedback from the students in the try-out they suggested simplifying the exercise in unit 3-point F and G . After some revisions from the feedback and suggestions from the expert validation and try-out the final product was completed. Based on the result of the research several suggestions are offered as the following. The first suggestion deals with how to make use of the product. The suggestions are directed to the English teachers to pay attention to the allocation of time in which one topic is assigned in two meetings. Teaching writing cycles that begin with BKOF MOT JCOT and ICT might spend much time if the teacher could not manage the time well. The suggestion is also directed to the students who will use this product. They should pay attention to the checklist in the assessment especially while they have to respond to the checklist containing the aspects of the evaluation because this is actually the core of the activity to improve the writing ability. It can be helpful to revise the writing composition as their own final product. The second suggestion deals with how to socialize the product. The students awareness of the importance of the materials should be built. This can be done at the beginning of the course in which the students are required to have the writing supplementary materials for the classroom use. Socialization can also be made to the institution for getting permission for using it in the classroom. The third suggestion deals with the possibility to improve the product. In the case that there might be different opinion in determining the criteria in the checklist of assessment the discussion among the English teachers can be held to get more feedback to improve the quality of the materials.
