Abstract

Thesis English Language Education Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. H. Yazid Basthomi M.A. (2) H. Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key words the SRSD strategy writing skill expository paragraphs Writing was a difficult skill for the students at STAI Rakha Amuntai-South Kalimantan. It could be seen from the result of the preliminary study which showed that the ability of the fourth semester students of the English Department at STAI Rakha Amuntai in writing paragraphs was still poor. The students were unable to express their ideas in a good paragraph. They made a number of mistakes in their writing in terms of content language use and mechanics. To overcome this problem the researcher proposed one of the strategies in teaching English expository paragraphs i.e. the Self-Regulated Strategy Development or the SRSD model. The research aimed at improving the ability of the fourth semester students of the English Department at STAI Rakha Amuntai in writing expository paragraphs using the SRSD model. For the purpose it employed Collaborative Action Research in which both the researcher and her collaborator worked together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting on the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students writing products. The subjects of this research were 25 students of the fourth semester students of the English Department at STAI Rakha Amuntai in the academic year 2009/2010. The study was conducted in two cycles and each cycle was carried out in three meetings. The instruments used were the writing tasks observation checklist field notes and a set of questionnaires. The reflection was based on the findings of the observation of teaching learning processes the students final products and the comparison with the criteria of success including (1) the writing tasks the students writing achievement ( 8805 75% students of the class achieved the scores greater than or equal to 60 of the range that lies from 0-100) and (2) an observation checklist and field notes (the students were actively involved in the writing activities). The findings indicated that using the SRSD model could improve the students ability in writing expository paragraphs. After the researcher conducted the first and the second cycles the result showed that the students scores in the first and second cycles improved. In the first cycle there were 14 (56%) students out of 25 students who achieved the target score (60) meanwhile in the second cycle there were 20 out of 25 students (80%) who achieved the target score (60). The steps were (1) explaining the strategy that will be used in this case POW strategy (planning organizing and writing) (2) giving the students a model how to use the strategy as clearly as possible (3) use instructional media (picture) which relate to the topic to activate students background knowledge. (4) asking the students to find relevant information from the picture to support their writing by engaging them to express their ideas in brainstorming technique (making outline) (5) independence practice by asking the students to write their rough/ first draft based on outline that they have made (6) asking the students to find their peer correction (7) asking the students to revise their peer s draft by using the guidelines format for revisions (8) asking the students to exchange their drafts and rewrite their revising draft based on their friend s corrections and teacher s comments (9) assigning the students to check the grammar and the mechanics of their writing by making reference to the editing guidelines format (10) asking the students to rewrite their final writing neatly (11) asking the students to publish their final draft on the whiteboard (12) asking the students to give comment on their friends final drafts. Based on the research findings some suggestions were offered. First for the students of writing courses they can utilize SRSD strategy to plan the ideas before they start writing. Second it is suggested that the English teachers/lecturers implement SRSD strategy in their teaching writing. The last for the future researchers it is suggested that the future researchers conduct research using the SRSD model with some modifications in terms of text types instructional media and the procedures of the presentation of the SRSD model or different skills such as listening speaking and reading.
