Thesis. Graduate Program of English Education of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Monica Djoehana D. Oka M.A (2) Prof. Dr. Nurmukminatien M.Pd. Key Words quality reading materials textbook readability suitability exploitability authenticity relevancy to standard of content The objective of this research is to find out the quality of reading materials in the English in Focus textbook. The research was guided by five specific research questions pertaining to five categories of qualified reading materials including readability of the text suitability of the text exploitability authenticity and relevancy of the texts to standard of content. This study therefore is designed as a descriptive-evaluative or content analysis with quantitative data. The instruments used to get the data are 1) ARTS (Analyses of Reading Text Sheet) which is made based on qualified reading material criteria suggested by Nuttal (1996) Anderson (1999) and Day (1999). It is used to evaluate the suitability exploitability authenticity and relevancy of the texts to the standard of content 2) RIC (Readability Index calculators ) that is employed to evaluate the readability of the texts and 3) Questionnaires which are used to see students and teachers attitude toward the reading materials in English in Focus. The fulfillment of criteria is quantified with very much (85%-100%) much (65%-84%) moderately (55%-64%) slightly (40%-54%) and very slightly (0-39%) which are then respectively considered as very good good fair poor and very poor. The researcher acted as the main evaluator besides also involving four peer evaluators at Graduate Program in English Education of Malang State University. The findings show that the readability index of reading materials used in the textbook English in Focus are very poor. In terms of suitability of content the reading materials are good. The exploitability of the text is categorized as good. The authenticity of the text is categorized as good. The relevancy of the text to the standard of content is categorized poor. Overall the quality of reading materials used in the textbooks is good. Although there are some texts particularly in term of readability of the texts which are inappropriate for the ninth graders and relevancy of the texts which is not relevant to the standard of content some other texts can somehow still be used since the other categories indicate that the texts are good. Based on the findings some suggestions are proposed. The writer is suggested to consider the text readability and relevancy before presenting the texts into a textbook. The teachers should exactly know the observed level of their students reading proficiency in order to be able to provide appropriate level of the texts. The teachers also should be able to generate technique of teaching reading when a certain possibilities of the qualification reading materials appeared. It is what the teachers do in the classroom as the impact of the quality of reading materials. Additionally teachers can use the category of selecting reading materials used in this research when they want to give supplementary reading materials from the other resources. It is also recommended for other researchers to conduct the same study at different level of the students i.e senior high schools.
