Abstract

Key words Proposed syllabus Management Department. The study was conducted with the purpose to propose a syllabus for English course in Management Department of Borneo University of Tarakan. This research employed Research and Development (R D) design. To obtain the information needed as a base for writing English syllabus 65 students of Management Department were asked to answer questionnaires. English language lecturer and 5 subject specialists were also interviewed with same purposes. The proposed syllabus was based on information gathered from students alumni English language lecturer subject specialists the officers at Management Department and document analysis relevant to the this study. The procedures of development cover needs analysis Richard s model of course development production of a proto syllabus production of pedagogical syllabus setting and subjects the instruments of data collection procedure of data collection technique of data analysis and evaluation and revision based on expert validation and try-out of the proposed syllabus. The proposed syllabus which contained (1) general instructional objectives specific instructional objectives (2) topic and sub-topics (3) teaching and learning activities (4) learning experience (5) the assessment (6) the time allocation (7) the source and media. It was validated by two experts in syllabus design as well as the lecturer of Management Department who has the mastery of the content and English language to check the appropriateness of the topics in the proposed syllabus. Further verification was conducted by trying-out the proposed syllabus involving the English lecturer of Management Department to make lesson plans based on the proposed syllabus. Concerning the methodology the results revealed teaching and learning activities are reading English texts having presentation doing pair-work exercises doing group-work exercises and listening to the audio-visual materials. In terms of instructional materials it was suggested that the English lecturer develop instructional materials in the form of loose-leaf consisting of listening reading speaking and writing and exercises. The content-based syllabus was chosen to maintain the learners motivation in learning English and to encourage the lecturers to reach the goal of the English course. The availability of an appropriate English syllabus for students of Management Department in a language program will make the English language lecturers easy to conduct the teaching and learning process into real classroom activities.
