Abstract

Thesis. Graduate Program in English Langauge Education the State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M. Pd. (II) Prof. Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. ABSTRACT Key words Writing Syllabus Instructional material. Since each component of the present Writing I syllabus used by English Language Education Program at State Institute of Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi is considered less related to each other and not easily interpreted it is necessary to provide a precise guideline for this course. The result of a preliminary survey in this program shows that the syllabus is not revised yet the teacher only follows the guideline available in the writing coursebook entitled Writing Academic English. It can be noted further that this guideline is not sufficient to meet the needs of novice writers because most academic writing is expository in nature that is suitable for intermediate to advanced students. Therefore a need for designing a syllabus and some instructional materials that are appropriate for the teaching of Writing I course for second semester students of English Language Education Program at this institution is inevitable. The Research and Development (R D) procedure is employed in this study. The model used for designing the syllabus and developing some instructional materials follow Yalden s model known as Language Program Development (1987) with a bit modification. It covers nine stages (1) need survey (2) description of the purpose (3) selection of syllabus type (4) production of proto-syllabus (5) production of pedagogical syllabus and instructional materials for five meetings (6) expert validation (7) field testing (8) revision and (9) final product. The developed syllabus which is designed to have skills in writing through process writing is categorized as skills and process syllabus because this type of syllabus emphasizes on organizing writing course around skills and process such as generating ideas organizing ideas and revising. The skills to master in Writing I are the abilities to create sentences and composing narrative and descriptive paragraphs. The topics to cover are the types of sentences and the organization of paragraphs and narrative and descriptive paragraphs. The grammar to follow is the differences between phrases clauses and sentences and the mechanics involved are on the punctuation and capitalization. The developed syllabus then was validated by an expert and tried-out to see its effectiveness. Later the syllabus was used as the basis to develop instructional materials for five meetings. The materials were also validated by another expert and tried-out. Based on the suggestions from the expert and the result of try-out the materials were revised. Therefore the final products of this study are a Writing I syllabus and the instructional materials for five meetings. The syllabus also provides five models of lesson plan. Both syllabus and instructional materials have been empirically tested in the try-out stage. Therefore it will be easy for the users to make the other lesson plans and instructional materials by referring to those models. Both products can optimally achieve their better quality when they are supported with more time and resources as well as by more people.
